Found this article on "the secrets" of running in a new engine.
Does anyone really boot the stones out of their brand new car? There are a lot of 'legends' about running in - anyone technical care to comment?

With my STI I did a bit of both. Treated it gently most of the time, but gave it a bit of a shoeing every now and again 'cos I was told it would loosen up and bed in the engine. The car was fine for 45k.
My Jag had no running instructions, except to say that I should 'gradually increase the speed throughout the first 1,000 miles to that of the vehicle's maximum'. I couldn't follow the instructions though, 'cos it's rated to 146mph.

Well my sis has got a BMW M3 coupe (had to wait 18 months for) and has been running that car in till 1,500 miles and told me she could not press Sport or go over 3,000 r.p.m. until she has it serviced.

Was told by Subaru dealer when picking P1 up, not to exceed xxxxrevs etc because after so long the replace the oil with thicker stuff? The first lot of oil is thin to bed engine in.

Have to agree with the running in on racetrack scenario recommended by MotoMan. When I raced bikes (4 strokes), except for afew easy laps to make sure everything was working properly, I never ran them in. And this included 24 hour races etc. And never had an engine failure or excessive oil consumption etc. I've never seen MotoMan's web page, but it certainly seems to contain alote of good stuff. Remember of course, thAT JUST BECAUSE IT'S BEEN PRINTED DOESN'T MEAN IT'S THE TRUTH.
