Thinking of buying a GPS
#1
Would do a search for this, but 'GPS' is only three letters and the search engine doesn't like it.
Want to buy a GPS as I like gadgets. Prefer to stay sub £200. Mostly interested in just getting stuff like lat/long, alt/az, velocity, etc. and tracks 'n' plots. But it would be nice to have some sort of mapping so I can use it in the car occasionally (not for route planning, but just to see where I am relative to other roads, etc.)
Got it narrowed down to either the Garmin E-Trex Legend (comes with European base map) at £184.99 or the Garmin EMap at £189.99. The latter doesn't seem to come with a PC cable though as it would be useful to output the NMEA data into a laptop running Autoroute or its ilk.
I used to work with military GPS receivers, so I do have some 'clue' as to how it all works

I have an E-Trex Venture which cost me just over £100 I think. The MapSource software is not very good to be honest, but does allow recorded tracks to be downloaded and overlaid on the map. The GPS works rather well when hooked up with a laptop running AutoRoute.
With a copy of GPSU (freeware) you can take an AutoRoute route and download it to the E-Trex as a route.
