Question

Hi,
We have discovered that the wife has real talent for painting... yet she is adamant she isnt good enough.
(I did an art degree and she is way better than I ever was)..

Any ideas as to how I can prove to her her work is great, and show her how art can be a reasonable earner if you know the right ppl..
(she missed out on college as a kid due to her mum getting ill..)

She hates her current job (retail) and longs for a change but it quite stressful for her to take the plunge..
I want to ease her round to investigating the idea.
She has been off work with post traumatic stress disorder so isnt feeling very confident about much at all.
Again ,gotta stress its a delicate issue (going back to work) and I dont want to return to her current job (which she hates) as it aggravates her PTSD.
Any sensible suggestions info appreciated.

I didn't say I get £25/hour

I just thought £25-£30 an hour was a reasonable rate for an 'amateur' artist (bear in mind that that figure has to absorb the cost of the materials).

Marconi's been a nightmare ever since I started working

The 'IT contractor' bit referred to the fact that I think it's fair to say "that painting took me 8 hours at £25 ph so I reckon £200 is a fair price", rather than looking at it and going "I reckon I can get £500 from some mug for that"

Cool

Great pics

Remember you can still sell 'prints' as well as the actual artwork itself.

I personally think most of these would look fantastic as an album/CD cover, so that may be one thing to try IMHO?

Are they definitely for sale? There is one that I really like, I will mail you about it. I recently commisioned someone to do an etching of a property for me. He is a semi-professional artist and charged £300 to do me 4 (same) prints. So I would say that gives an idea of what you could expect. He might have tried for a little more if I wasn't a friend.

Charlie.

Brad -

sorry, i didn't make it clear. He made an etching that the prints were made from, so they were originals. He had to go to the place, sketch the house, agree the sketch with me, then make the etching thing (I don't know exactly how the process works) then he does an ink wash thing to make a print which is then retouched by hand to create 4 same but unique prints. So it was quite a lot of work. Normally he said he would do 2 prints for £300-£400 and charge £70 for each additional one.

Charlie.

Let her enjoy her art for a while, it probably helps the PTSD. Perhaps get her to do paintings as gifts for friends and family to start with, if she is good, other people will like her work and start to ask for commisions, then when she has little more confidence BAM 5 year buiness plan and an exhibiton in the Tate.

hehe

our house is crammed with huge paintings she has done in the wee hours (midnite-6pm) she does them when she cant sleep.. (often)
we are running out of room!

..she has also given a few away but only after much reassurance..

She just doesn't see how good they are..*shame* but I still cant MAKE her believe..

as for selling them she daren't.
funny tho, her Docs suggested art therapy for her.. and when she went her work exceeded that of the OT (ocuppational therapy)person running the class!!! LOL

A hint on pricing: my art teacher told me to set yourself a reasonable hourly rate (say, £25 an hour) then price according to how long it took you. Seems fair to me (IT contractor)

why not stick some stuff on ebay and see how it sells. then there's no embarassment factor if you dont sell loads.

there are several artists who sell original stuff and the ones i've bought are pretty good

Cool

I have sold art despite having very little formal training.

Basically I made some work took images along to a local smallish gallery *** shop. I was absolutely gobsmacked that they took 3 pieces and sold them all quite quickly

I also joined Yorkshire Artspace, a studio space and got some work through being on their web site, and was approached by larger galleries nationwide and had an article in a magazine

If she is too nervous to take her stuff along to any gallery, why dont you pretend to be her agent and take it along for her?

She could also look at Artists Newsletter magazine which has details of exhibitions. basically you need to get very good quality slides or stills of her work to submit. Again, no face to face contact

However after all that, art can be very difficult to make money from, and be prepared to spend time building up the portfolio and reputation. The best money seems to come from Public Art, which is often scuptural. I know a lot of poor artists unfortunately. Ironically I used to live with one who had a show with Damien Hirst when they were both students. His work was shown as an image in the catalogue, whilst Damien's didn't feature. He now lives on the breadline Great bloke tho.

I wish her all the best tho, and if there is any more info she or you want, or just want a chat, please get in touch, I'm a crap typer, you might be best ringing me I'd be really interested to see her work
