swan, so do i mate. But taking holidays to see eclipses is a damned worthwhile reason, from my experience. Didn't understand the point you were making there...

Just that planning a holiday around seeing the sun getting blotted out doesn't really sound like a good idea to me. Each unto their own. I also understand accomodation in the areas that get the best view has been booked out for a number of months. Some friends actually booked their accomodation 2 years ago!

Which one swan? The one in the UK in August 99 was, as Mark said, one of the weirdest, yet memorable experiences i have had.
Although travelling to Devon courtesy of the Orient Express certainly didn't diminish the enjoyment!
Everybody should see an eclipse once in their lives, imo.

Oh yes, the Eclipse of 99. We were in Newquay camping for a week, and it just happened to be the week of the eclipse.
Watched it from Perrenporth beach, and it was defo one of the most humbling experiences ever. Everything goes dark, birds suddenly fly out from everywhere etc etc
Fantastic - wont forget it.

I was on Fistral, it was amazing.
Sped down there from Bristol with a few mates last minute, no traffic, past loads of empty fields with massive signs up "Eclipse Camping £50", planned to go out that night and just sleep in the car. Got there booked in to the 1st hotel we tried , great night out. Woke up at 10:45 cloudy and drizzle wandered down to the beach anyway, thought 'hmmm better get some of those paper shades just in case a hole in the cloud appears..' , bloke walks past selling them 1/2 price A hole in the cloud did indeed appear we saw the eclipse perfectly!! That was the last we saw of the sun all day The "NAHHH! in your face!!" to all the peeps that took this p!ss before hand was nearly as much fun as the eclipse!!

Missied the eclipse in the UK as I was on holiday in San Francisco (great planning ). Howerver, got treated to a 4.something earthquake while I was on the 25th floor of the hotel.
Shame I missed it really. I would like to see it sometime. But knowing my luck it will probably happed at night
