How do I destroy a floppy?
#1
I've been given a box load (or in Hull speak a "lerd") of floppy disks to destroy as the info is confidential. I rang our IT "un"helpful desk and they told me to cut them up (yeah right, like I've got nothing else to do for the next 2 weeks!. Apart from going through the whole box and wiping them using my PC what else can I do!
You guys have come up trumps with info in the past so I have full confidence in you all!!!!!!

Magnets aren't that good at destroying data on disks unless it contains a really important report that you cant afford to lose.
Stick them through a powerful shredder

Do you have a kitchen in the building? Stick 'em in a pasta pan of water and boil them for half an hour? Not sure of the heat resistance of your average floppy TBH.
What about a microwave (quietly ignoring the metal bits in the middle!)?

Raise a call with your it help desk and ask them to destroy them... theres companys that will do it..
Cutting the disc is no good, can still be read.. depends how mad you want to go...
throw them around the office.. .the way we throw things they wont last long..

Try and find a company that does this
They will come to your company and shred disks, HD most date storage devices for you
They do it at your place of work no chance of data being recovered

Hah! This is easy. Never mind all these time wasting methods on here, all you have to do is put the discs down on the desk in front of you, and say clearly, "Oh, these disks contain SUCH important information, I must be sure it doesn't get lost. "
Then the disks will know, and you can be certain that the info on them will be completely garbled next time you want it.
Works every time for me.

Thanks for all you "suggestions" guys, I have now sorted it. I was having a little moan about it to someone when our office cleaner came in. She told me all about a machine that used to be in our main administration building that chewed them up. I made several enquiries and have found it in a cupboard!!!! It's just an industiral looking shredder and chops them up.
So next time you have an IT enquiry ask your cleaner 'cos ours knows more than our IT unhelpful desk.
Many thanks chaps!!
