Thanks for your total support and objectivity of the underling problem of job cuts, closing Fire Stations near you, the prevention of cutting people out of vehicles, the extra duties we carry out of cleaning up in the event of a chemical spillage, mass Decontamination in the event of terrorist actions , Environmental protection responsibilities, spate conditions of flooding, Search and rescue of people at home and abroad in collapsed structures etc etc etc.
Never mind though hey.

MowbrayWRX,
Lets face it, the '04 and '07 cuts were always going to happen !
This just lets the Govt look 'hard' in the eyes of other unions and the uninformed public.
Just bookmark these threads......in years to come it will be 'the fire station in my town is closing' and 'my family died cos there were not enough FF on nightshift'
Just a thought

Mowbray - If the strike had been headlined "Strike to stop stations closing" it would have had infinitely more public support.
Any union that headlines its strikes (and TV covergae and banners and placards etc.) with "40%" is barking mad and doing its members and the public it claims to protect a huge dis-service.
The abosultely best thing the FBU could do to regain Public support would be to sack gilchrest - hes certainly not doing the fire brigade any favours at the moment.

They clearly didnt expext to get 40% but do seem to be angling for the 16/20% mark which is deluded in itself and the headline claims of 40% just annoys 75% of the public.

Next where going to have soldiers on strike saying, we have to take bullets for you lot risk our lives for the sake of yours.....!!!!
You know all this before you join either the army or the fire brigade.... So how come its such a big a problem, when the question of money arises..???
I understand fireman have a risky job, but surly its in the job description which they read before they start..
I have a friend who is a retained fireman and he does very well out of it... all he has to do is turn up at the station weather he makes it on the truck or not he still get paid..! this is aswell as his 9-5 job money..
just my 2p worth..!

The FBU - which voted for strike action after its demands for a 40% pay rise were dismissed are having to come to terms with the consequences of their badly thought out actions.
The army are currently illustrating how the future fire service will operate – flexibly. Even though they are far fewer in number and have oudated equipment and apparently no training they are coping well. The truth is coming out now. The FF really are going to regret Gilchrilst leading them into this stupid strike adventure.
There will be more black and other minorities recruited – no more closed shop and there will be 10,000 redundancies when the modernisation begins. Apparently 20% of firefighters due to retire within three years and they won’t be replaced (or missed).
If only they had kept their heads down and their mouths shut their cushy little lifestyle might have continued for a while longer, but not now. They’ve blown it forever.
Have a nice life guys…

Reply> The same pay reveiw board that gave the MPs a 39% pay rise recommended the Fire Fighters their rise, not the FBU.

Reply >The Forces are being led by Senior Officers of the Fire Service and as you say are doing a good job, however the Insurance companies might not think so when all our premiums go up.

Reply> We cant get minorities to join the Fire Service. There have been numerous efforts nationally and locally to get minorities to join, but to no avail.

I too am getting fed up with it, we got our final pay offer yesterday of 3.6% which takes us to less than FF's are on already!! And with interest when the 2 day strike was over the statistics showed 19 jobs in 2 days!! for the whole of Grampian and 2! in Highland, during the same period the ambulance service answered 300 - 400 urgent and 999 calls, so who has the £5 million station and slumberland beds on nights and a fully equipped gym and can run a service without overtime cover? - the ambulance service - Eh NNNOOO!!!!???? It's time they woke up and enter the real world,
Gary.
