Can you surf sites such as Scoobynet?? Would be very very handy on the move.

So what are your conclusions of this phone so far? Worth it or wait till another version comes out?

Well my two SPV's have arrived...

Very cool phones, but far too complex to learn quickly!

Loads of features and a windows GUI - I know its not going suit everyone but the outlook connectivity is excellent (eg it will automatically switch to meeting mode if you have a meeting!)

But its certainly fun!

I've also got one, had it for a week now.

Really cool phone but the best bit is all info is backed up onto your PC, should you lose the phone.

Contacts and diary are sync'd too. Email and web works well and the screen is really good.

The games are Gameboy quality and you can stream video too, how cool is that?

Top phone.

I paid £129 from Orange and this included the docking station and software, a 4meg memory card, camera, leather case and sterio headphones.

Quick question - does it have Polyphonic ringtones or not as it doesnt seem to say on the Orange website which would suggest the answer is no.

The ring tones seem somewhere between Nokia beeps and full polyphonic.

That may just be the quality of the tones that come with it.

There's plenty of info on a microsoft site. Search smartphone on Google.

The ringtones are not polyphonic, they are WAV files, and therefore pretty much anything you like and no more paying for the tones!

Just sample off your fav. CD or download an MP3 and convert back

Am playing with my new SPV as we speak. Using it via GPRS to connect to Scoobynet ;-)

With a 512SD card in the side, the MS bod at the demo I saw had the whole Braveheart DVD loaded onto it

The biggest problem is that it isn't Bluetooth, due to the Bluetooth 1.1 spec not being finalised at the time the phone was built. Orange bloke said that the next phone will obv. be BT, and there are BT SD cards in development.

Here's my home page wall paper in the correct size, if anyone wants it.

Save it into the IPSM folder on the phone then select it from the phone under home screen in settings.

Cool - I'll have to sort some piccies out for mine!

Love the outlook sync stuff as I tend to forget things...

What the biggest SD card you can get then? I've pretty much filled the space already...

Oh and has anyone tryed MMC cards? I've got a 32mb one still sealed, but I might actually open it if its going to work!

Where can you buy SD cards? I looked at mine and its actually 8meg but I also fear it won't stay very empty for long.

How cool is playing the Chemical Bros video to people that want to see what it does?

How does it compare to my Siemens SL45i?

This can too be sync'd to Outlook etc, but uses MMC cards (for file storage, MP3 playback & dictaphone stuff) You can also record phone calls onto the MMC

The only disadvantage is the lack of colour screen....

Unless anybody can think of any other reasons - I'm out of contract the end of the month, so might be in the market for a new phone.....

waddya think?

Cool

Check out this review of the SPV, which isn't exactly what I'd call 'glowing'.

Hmm, interesting comments.

I'd agree that it has probably been released before it is ready, it is certainly not as stable as my Nokia 6310i, but my experiences are a lot better than his. Clearly M$ have released it when they have because they felt they had to, the crucial thing for me is that it is completely software upgradeable, and therefore (at a price, of course ;-)) you will be able to upgrade to Smartphone 2003 next year and so on.

Don't know what he means about not being able to dial from contacts , I have synced all my contacts from Outlook to the phone, and can call any of them

The keyboard is definitely too small, but I can live with it. The screen is very good, and I have uploaded a WAV file with an section of my favourite Dandy Warhols track as a ring tone as well as customising the desktop etc.

MarkO I also disagree strongly with the review.

I have no problems retrieving numbers and dialling out. Also sending an sms or email (if you have details for both in a persons profile, it asks you which you want to use - really neat)is easy and much better than my 6210.

The key pad is small, but if you want a big key pad, get a Communicator. I have no problem with it.

If his kid stood further away, may be it would have been in focus, like the bush is. If anyone expects EOS D6 quality from the camera on a £129 phone they are going to be disappointed.

My phone has never hung or crashed either.

I do agree that some websites are not very friendly to the screen resolution and I expect future updates will have some scaling to address this. But really, a phone is never going to replace your 19" monitor is it?

My only critism is that I haven't found a way to edit the T9 dictionary, although even this seems to get my words first time, whereas my 6210 often took a bit of key pressing to get the right word.

The upgradability, desktop compatibility and memory expansion potential make this a big hit for me.

The best thing to do is to try it. Orange are offering a 14 day money back gaurantee if you don't like it.

Agree with Pete on this...

The phone does what I want - mainly Outlook sync-ing with loads of memory (I have 5-10 meetings a day and forget things), then the video and powerpoint things are great for the pub!

Not saying its a perfect phone, but I was sick of waiting for the P800 (which will no doubt be dearer) and using an old phone (as my current just out warranty nokia had broken.

Oh and I've not a nice female background now

The Register don't think much of it either.

I think I'll stick to my NEC e606 as I like the live videophone capability, GPS location services, 384kpbs data transfer speed etc etc.

Surprise, Surprise, the Register are M$ hostile!

Never expected that <engage irony mode> as they're always so independent where Uncle Bill's corporation is concerned </disengage irony mode> ;-)

384 kbps? On which network?

Got a url where we can check it out ?

Do any of you guys know if you can take a picture of someone, save it, then when that person rings, his/her picture will flag up?

BL - absolutely, the phone is fully software upgradable, no more sending back to Nokia/Motorola etc.

There will be a release of Smartphone 2003 some time next year, no doubt for a small upgrade charge ;-)

RB5-Black - The biggest WAV file is only dictated by the storage on the phone. Included with the package is an 8Mb card, my ring tone WAV is 3.5MB, but I guess if you put a large (512MB?) card in, then you can have a whole track, though I haven't tried this...

I made the sounds folder and then dropped the WAV's into it on my SPV.
