Question

Is there any way to remove light scratches from CDs? I was thinking using Brasso or T Cut. Is this a good idea?
Thanks, Rob.

Try it and let us know

not T-Cut I would have thought..bit too abrasive maybe...Brasso may be better.

Try Mr Sheen first

Whats the WORST that can happen? You have to buy a new copy. Go for it

You can remove them, but you'll also remove the readable surface leaving you with a coaster!

The writable/readable surface on a CDR is also protected by plastic. I tried the clear labels once instead of the white ones I normally use, didin't like it and tried to remove it 10 seconds later. I was left with a clear pastic disk, same as at the ends of a spindle pack, and a floppy CD

There are commercial products to remove scratches, a home brew can't be any worse.

Bizarre as it sounds, toothpaste with warm (ish) water usually does the trick nicely. However I cant get the scratches out of my GTA3 disk which now refuses to load up the disk - If you find out a better solution, pls tell me!!! :-)

It doesn't. It takes the edge off the scratch allowing the laser light through properly without refracting.

You have to rub the toothpaste across the cut though, not along it. You will get some very minor abrasions from the toothpaste, but this does normally work!

Thumbs up

A company called "Russ Andrews" somewhere up in the lakes, makes a product that'll clean and renovate cd's.

I've got some of the Crystal Disc stuff at home. Has fixed a couple of what I thought were stuffed CDs in the past.

Not sure who sells it these days though...

What about filliong the scratches with some kind of polish? Then there wouldn't be the funny angles for the laser to refract off.

T cut definately does work.

Rub radially though, not round 'n round.
