Going to New York
#1
Davyboy.
I feel safe walking around the right areas in New York too. But for someones first time there it's easy to get lost and end up in the not so nice areas.
Don't know about you, but there's loads of places in the UK that i don't feel safe. New York is just the same except they have guns.
Still one of the best places i've ever been

I also felt totally safe.
In fact the only time I was in danger of physical violence, was when me and Mrs C went for a drink in Hooters, which was opposite our hotel. Mrs C became very agitated when to our surprise we found that the name referred to the size of the barmaid's endowment. What made it even worse was that this particular evening was had a special appearance of the Hooters calendar girls.
After one drink, we retired to the hotel bar. Imagine my dismay when the same 12 calendar girls appeared in our bar, 30 minutes later, as they were staying in our hotel

Don't let your misses buy you any clothes out there....unless you like baggy Jeans big enough to fit Rik Waller and Air Tex vests with Basketball motif's on them...

1.Visit the Empire State building....great view.
2.Maceys....the worlds biggest department store around 32nd street IIRC (walking distance from Empire State)
Do them both together...

My sister was there a few months back and said that Ground Zero is not something she'll forget in a hurry. Said she was totally shocked at the scale of it. Bound to be worth going along to see.
I think there's an old submarine and an aircraft carrier you can get tour round too. And of course the Empire State Building.
From my own experience, I'd recommend getting a boat trip round Manhattan. It'll take you out to the Statue and past all the different areas in Ney York (Bronx, Queens etc). Best thing about being there is just walking around near time square... by far the most atmospheric place i've ever been. Oh.. and go find Broadway ... you'll be surprised when you see what it actually looks like.
Remember, try not to look like a tourist. It's not the safest of places to go walking around.

I lived in NY and it is a great place. Like any city in the world it has it's crime but if you use a little common sense then you will come to no harm.
Beware of the Subway system.
Express means is goes from one point to another without stopping.
Local means that it will stop at each station.
It is easy to get on an express train by mistake and end up miles from where you want to be.
Enjoy it. It is one of the greatest cities in the world.

You MUST get a helicopter flight around Manhattan.
http://www.libertyhelicopters.com/ We did the New York New York trip which takes you around the skyscrapers across to the Statue of Liberty and then back up over Central Park and the Yankees Stadium. Its just over £100 each but worth every penny.
Empire State is a must, so is shopping at the top of Madison Ave.
If the weathers good, a walk in Central Park is great too.

If you're a moslem then don't bother going to the US or you'll end up being sent "back" to afghanistan even if you are british. This happened to an Arab Canadian last week and he still hasn't been heard off ever since being deported.

As with anywhere, keep your wits about you, avoid areas that look dodgy or you have bad feelings about etc. same as any city that you've never visited.
My G/F & her friend are going out there shopping in a few weeks. They're not worried & will enjoy the trip as will you! (good job the g/f has her own credit card/bank account to drain while she's out there ))

Bad timing with the bubonic plague resurfacing, but I’m sure you’ll be fine
You don’t say how long you are going for but I can assure you it wont be long enough! SO much to see and do you feel your wasting time by sleeping.
It is as safe as anywhere and I’ve never seen so many coppers on the street (even prior to September 11th) so keep out of dark alleys and you’ll be fine.
Have a wicked time on your first trip of many
Jealous of surrey

The hop on hop off tour busses are good too. About $30 for a two day ticket.
I love New York and this thread has brought back very happy memories

Don't know how long you are going for but you can get a book from some of the tourist places which is 50 bucks and gets you into lots of places, including, HMS Intrepid (and the submarine) Empire State, Museum of Modern Art, Natural History...
Red Ee Grill in mid town (just up from time square) is a great place to eat... me and Mrs P got there at 10 pm and when we left at 12.30 people were still coming in!!!
Also visit The View, it's at the top of the Marriott just on Time Square and has a revolving restaurant that takes an hour to go round..
Also recommend Macy's if you are there on a Thursday (I think) it is sale day... they have one a week.. also try Bloomingdales.. Saks on 5th avenue is their equivalent to Harrods..
Depending how long you're there for Statue of Liberty is quite good, but some mates of mine who came out when I was there for 2 weeks went (they were there 3 days) and thought it was a waste of half a day...
Central Park is good to see... but mind the dog ****...
You will find you get a crick in your neck as everything is soooo high.
NBC studios are a good trip... you get shown round and if you get down there early on the saturday morning there's a whole load of people there waving at the cameras for the today show...
the cabbies are a nightmare, none of them know where they are... I once had one ask ME how to get somewhere...
You will have a great time
Dave

Superb - looks like I have just decided where we are going on our honeymoon next year then
Sounds really cool - we have been on about NY as a destination, but the problem being I want a fortnight there, the missus wants a week in NY, then a week somewhere else (San Francisco???).
Anyone done the honeymoon thing to NY? Other options are Italy so far...
Cant wait now <rubs hands together>

DW as you can see, no-one comes back from NY dissapointed.
It is the only place I have been to and thought "it looks exaclty like it does on TV/Magazines/Films etc"
A week would be about right.
