Was thinking about doing this as a career as a mate reckons they earn 30-40k.
Can anyone confirm if it really is this well paid

Apparently it is that well paid - in London atleast - but would (obviously) depend on the hours you put in.

The knowledge test is supposed to be quite tough and they only give out a limited number of licences each year.

Then again a tube driver earns £30k and that can't exactly be difficult.......

OK, here's my two euro's worth:
You could prob get that sort of money if you worked in a big city. On the other hand, you'd have to put up with:
1 drunks
2 abusive drunks
3 sick drunks, (cleaning cab out is YOUR prob.)
4 abusive non-drunks
5 people who constantly treat you like ****
'cos YOU drive a cab
6 people who always know better than you
including the route you should take
7 trying to find an address in the cold
and dark
8 long hours, not limited by tachograph
9 being robbed
9 "runners"
10 aggressive people
11 nutters
12 perverts.
I've probably missed one or two here, and I haven't even started on what it will cost you to get a license, (Hackney Carriage), what with medical, test, "the knowledge" if in London, cost of the license itself...........
You may have realised by now that I have a small experience of cabbying, albeit in a minicab, and in a small provincial town.
Some nights I would go out from 6 until midnight, and "earn" less than £4!!!! And on a bad night, that included tips!
At weekends, we did 5pm until whatever time, usually 4am plus, and took home about £40 plus tips of up to £20. Sometimes much less!
I once did a "double shift", working from 6am until 4am the next day, half an hour for lunch, 40 minutes for tea, and earned about £85, plus £20 tips for 22 hour's work. You can't physically do that very often though.
Oh, and finally, while I was working for one firm, they got two black cabs. We used to FIGHT, NOT to have to drive them: cold, noisy, uncomfortable, lousy clutch, long throw gear change, poor visibility etc etc.
Don't do it m8!!!
