You should be able to run the setup straight off the XP CD to do the upgrade - it will recognize you are upgrading and do the rest.

IF you really want to format your HDD then in Win98, go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and look for the Windows98 startup disk option. Create the floppy and then reboot with the floppy disk in the diskette drive. When it boots, type "format c:" and it'll wipe out your drive. Keep that floppy disk handy - you'll need it to reboot your system with the drivers for the CD drive installed so you can install XP.

Cheers Frenchie!!

When you are making the floppy boot up disc is there anything you can do if you don't have the win98SE cd?
Is it possible to make the floppy from files on the c: drive?

I thought it was " format c:/s " (s being system files transfered to HDD) as far as I am aware the HDD would not be bootable without the system files being transfered to it.

please correct if wrong !!!

Yes that would be the case, however when XP installs it installs the relevent system files anyway so you dont need to transfer them over.

I have not bothered with a format c:/s since the OS CD's became bootable.

Ian,

Is that the case if you have xp installed already?
I have 98se installed and want to upgrade it to xp, so do I have to install xp as an upgrade THEN use the xp disc to reformat, or can I reformat with the xp disc while it is 98 that is installed?

Now I know why I don't work in IT

Unhappy

Jason,
I'm pretty clueless, thats why all the questions!!
Can't follow STi's advice as I don't have the cd for win98se (which is installed at the mo).
Is there any way I can make up a boot disc from either my xp disc or from the files on the hard drive at the mo?

Dougie
