I like the look of the new Panasonic GD87 but it does all the things you don't want

So....

I'd say look at the new Nokia 7210

Tiggs, not sure if its the phone that does that or a combination of your PC / ISP.

I had an Orange email account which notified me on my mobile when I got an e-mail, think Voda also offer this with VIZAVI, might even deliver them direct to your phone, if thats a case whilest you were out and about flogging dodgy insurance, you could set your PC to forward all mails on your "home" account to your orange.net account/ vizavi.co.uk account.

Personally I just use a PDA with a GPRS phone, but can rarely be arsed to check, plus Mr Plod gets a bit funny if you are spotted retrieving your emails whilst travelling at 70mph on the motorway!

PDA and GPRS phone is the best solution really or...

02 XDA
or
Orange HP PDA/Phone thing are the two I know of that combine the fetaures in a 'useable' fashion (unlike the 7650 - which I've been told is dubious for email)
Oh and I suppose the 9210i would do the job too
The new Sony P800 looks like an excellent compromise but stock isn't due here until early next year as fair as I can tell
