I'm just about to buy a secondhand set of winter tyres for use in East Europe during the winter. The set offered have 5mm thread left.
Is that any good? and what depth thread do road tyres normally start of at?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Alan

Not completely sure, but I think it might be 6mm?
However, the legal limit is 1.6mm, so I'd say you're OK...

Most tyres are 8mm new. 5mm for 2ndhand sounds fine to me. Check for damage, cuts, etc. outside and inside before you buy them.

My road legal michelin pilot sport slicks came with only 4mm of tread - and that's brand new.......3mm of loss equates to around 6k miles of use

winter tyres are gubbed with 4mm left as they need a deep tread to work correctly. They are originally 8mm.
