Nearly bought a 42" Samsung Plasma TV Today - £3000 in Currys - ONLY £3000!! I thought, bl00dy cheap that - so, Mr Salesman, put it in my boot ............... wife chips in, "Are there any costs to running it over a normal TV"?

Imagine my HORROR when he said, "Well, yes maam, they need re-charging every 12 months the cost will be around £100"!!!!!!

What the Fukc?????????????????????????

Is this true? - if so, why would ANYONE buy one?????????????????

I think he is talking out of his **** Pete. I reckon this could become THE big scam with plasma TVs - in the same way everyone used to get conned into taking 'extended warranties'.

Most plasma tv manufacturers will quote a screen life expectancy of between 15000 and 40000 hours. Typically you would expect a plasma screen tv to last around 10 years (depending on usage).

The more expensive the tv, the longer the screen life expectancy should be. Also note the pixel ratio - get as high as you can - obviously you'll pay more for a better ratio.

I've got a friend with a plasma and certainly there is no servicing involved.

One thing I would say is if you see it for 3k in Currys then it's worth surfing the net to see if it is even cheaper somewhere else...

If you want a deal have a look here www.bestpricetv.com if you have seen something that we havent got mail me and I'll see waht I can sort out. Degaussing would be impossible on a plasma. As far as I'm aware there are no procedures in place for re-gassing a plasma and I have never heard of it being done. It is worth considering how you are going to connect the screen up. Some have a tuner box, so connection is just like that of a tv, other do not. Will it be used with a home cinema amp, the list goes on. Some screens have composite, RGB, S-vedeo and any other number of connnections but they will default to the highest resolution that is connected. Others do not behave in this way. Anyway have a look and let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Thanks Chaz - lots to think about, so? is it NOT true that they need re-gassing each year? I KNOW he only works in CURRYS so you shouldnt expect too much - BUT surely he would know??

I need to do some homework!! It was an impulse buy see?? at 2 weeks pay it just seemed an incredible bargain!!

I will wait - till Xmas?!

£2999 for the Samsung, I'll see what I can do. Again you have to look at the spec on these screns very closely. You may be looking a a screen at £3k with a contrast ratio of 300:1 when the screen down the road at £3.5k has a contrast ratio of 3000:1 Again you have to asses the conectivity of the panel, no point getting a bargain if it is no good to you. To put it another way if you knew nothing at all about scoobs and all the model types you may be very happy about buying a Sport for £6k when you should have bought a turbo for £7k

Pete,

I've been looking at buying a plasma TV and please don’t buy one from Curry or Dixons or Coment as they don't know what they are talking about. There is a lot of difference between plasma screens (for example the number of colours it can display). Have a look at www.avforums.com and see some of the posts. Some very knowledgeable people from the industry tend to comment all the time.

Also have a look at http://www.tmfsolutions.co.uk/ as they are a professional plasma supplier.

You also need to consider the source that you are going to use through the plasma such as DVD or Sky Digital, are these up to scratch as the best plasma will display a very good picture with a good source (prog scan DVD player).

It's worth looking at the professional plasma screen rather than the consumer oriented screens, as these are normally better quality.

Panasonic also do a very good guarantee for one year giving you a replacement screen if it breaks down (designed for the corporate environment). Panasonic screens are also regarded as the best in the industry at the moment, closely followed by pioneer.

Cool

I have one - b*llcks they need servicing. Mine's got an in-built indicator that says it has a good 12000 hours left. That'll do me until they've released holographic tvs (help me obiwan.... you're my only hope etc !) Good buy these days although piccy quality will never be as good as a high end tube.

John Lewis in Brent Cross have professional Panasonic 42" plasma monitors going for less than 3.5k.
Well worth it if you're going to be using it solely as a monitor and have no need for speakers and tv tuner in-built.

If you're buying one, try to look for one with a DVI input as that as that will be the next home cinema standard for high-resolution video

Re-gas.........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Talking out of there ****!

see http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv.html

for more info - it is an american site but 99% of it is completely relevant - it even has an FAQ section on the bo11ocks that ***** salesmen try to tell you that patently arent true.

Although the £3000 one in currys is tempting - I looked at it meself...I am still saving for a Panasonic PW5 model, which seems to be the best you can buy at the mo, for about £3,500ish off the net.

Cool

Have a look at this story, and you'll see that prices are likely to fall like a stone in the next 6-12 months, not to mention quality improving.

I'd say hold off for bit - decent 42" plasmas will probably halve in price in the next 12 months before the price starts to stabilise.

Degaussing £100????
You can buy the device that does it for less than £50, and do it yourself in less than 30 seconds!!
What was the name of the company that were going to do it? "Senior-Cummin"?

You can't degauss a plasma screen because there are no magnets

You also can't recharge the gas
