it goes back into the dvla system,unless you want to keep it which will cost about £80 to do(i think it can only be kept on retention for so long,then stump up another £80) is it an "x123 abc" or
"x1 abc"?

£80 puts it on retention for one year, if you wish to keep it on retention for longer, it costs you £25 per year thereafter.
