Does anyone know how to turn off a fire alarm that's been going off since 9:00 am - nothing seems to work - what would happen if we took a sledge hammer to it?

If its a clanger, stuff a towel between the ringer and the bell. If its a siren you are stuffed unless you cut the power supply.
