Ok
Heres the top with the top bearings in place
Now on goes the collar (I'm 99% sure this was next...)
This is as far in as it will go
So the cup that goes over the top don't fit down far enough
So when the stem is one things aint right Doing up the end cap don't push the collar on either...it just does up and I end up not being able to turn the bars
Make any sense??

Ok, took off my Sid's for ther service, now I can't get the sodding AHEADSET back in correct
The bottom bearings set no problem, the fork tube goes in, bearing sitting in the top cup fine. Next I slip over the angled split collar to hold the fork tube central, this sits onside the bearings in the top cup mounted in the frame.
When I put the top cup cover on it won't sit in fully, the split collar is sitting too high, but it won't go in any further
I've tried putting the stem on and doing up the top cap but there's like a 3mm gap tween the cup in the frame and the cover.
What am I doing wrong!, I need this for a ride in the morning

As last post, put the bearing cover back FIRST, then the split thingy, there's usually sommat to press down on top of that, like a spacer etc, then your stem.
Easy Peasy
Alcazar
Tip: WHENEVER you take ANYTHING off a bike, lay it out in the order it came off on a piece of kitchen roll, or clean rag.
Keeps the crap off it, and you can easily see how it goes back!

Split ring thingy deffo goes in after the top cup goes on. It should slot and slide down into the top cup to fit almost flush.

When you say "change the bearings", do you mean the ball races, or the cups?
You can get the cups out by passing a length of hard wood, a long screwdriver etc down the inside of the head tube, lodging it against the inner edge of the cup, and giving it a sharp tap or two with a hammer.
Getting them back in again is another matter entirely, and unless you really know what you're doing, and have confidence, and are VERY careful, I'd leave it to a bike shop who have a special tool.
Changing the races is straight replacement.
PROPER bike tools are WELL worth the money. Just don't let your teenage boys use 'em!!!!
