Any of the TravelLodges any good?
Edited to say don't forget that if you're an RAC member, you get a 20% discount there!

what sort of area in london (or will the surrounding areas do if accessable by train??)
If accessable areas by train then there is a pub called the Colney Fox in London Colney (just off the M25, j22??) which you could try
You may need to go though directory enquiries to get a number thou as its been a couple of years since ive stayed there.

If its my own money I stay at
http://www.citadines.co.uk/ukindex0.htm in Holborn.
If I'm claiming it I stay at Hasletts in soho.
They are generally cheaper through www.hoteldiscounts.com than their own sites.
