If so, why didnt the garage you got it from ring and tell you??

The fixed price is £39. But some garages will do a cheaper deal (and then charge more for repairs, whether or not they were required
). Some let you take the car back after you have fixed any probs up to 2 weeks later, but IIRC they can actually charge full fee for re-inspection, even if only one thing needs looking at e.g. light bulb.
Check all obvious things e.g. bulbs, horn, wipers etc. first to avoid a fail and re-test.
