I doubt anyone can help except a dentist but here goes:
Way back, years ago I fell over drunk, hit a curb and smashed my front tooth out. Ended up having a nice crown fitted which looked great.
4 years ago, I developed a lump above said crown, which grew bigger and bigger and one day went bang (horrible stuff). Then it disappeared so I left it at that. Anyway, about 2 years ago it came back for another go at hurting me, and this time was much worse, to the point where it used to build up then pop a lot.
I went to the dentist, and they said it was an absess.
They drilled up through my crown (with no anesthetic - ouch!!) about an inch deep and tried something called resorbption or something.
The idea was to inject the area with antibiotics til the infection went, then open my gum, clean it and stitch it.
After 4 goes with this antibiotic stuff, it hadnt worked, so they referred me to Manchester Dental Hospital. Waiting list was 30 weeks (yes, that's half a year ). The appointment came round, and I went, but the lump wasn't there so they didnt do anything.
Now the headache bit:
1. The crown is my front left tooth.
2. The front right tooth is cracked above the gum all the way across (due to earlier incident).
3. Therefore cant bridge onto it with new crown.
4. The tooth next to my front left tooth is a double one - supposedly rare, but it has a front part, then another smaller tooth on the back.
Now, the bigger headache:
1. The filling on my crown which was holding the absorption stuff in has fallen out, and now as well as it hurting like buggery, horrible gunk is coming out of it.
2. Just had a letter to say my dentist is leaving the surgery on monday so I have to register with another dentist (for which there is a shortage in East Lancs).
So my question (finally) - what the hell can be done with my teeth?
I dont want them false teeth that are like braces (that you slide in)
Any tips? (Sorry for the long post)

From my own reckoning, they will have to bridge 4 false teeth from my Vampire ones (not sure of techical name), which means having 4 teeth out (including the double rare one - which I quite like), and having 4 falseys put in.

Whoah...I was enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Sounds a bit tricky for a normal dentist (I hear a challenge coming on). But on a more serious note, there dental reconstruction specialists out there who would have no problem sorting this one out. Good luck.

Both my top two front teeth have had absesses and drilled as you describe and a root filling put in..
There was no antibiotic injection done with mine though, both times it was the root that had died casing the absesses.
It was drilled, no pain relief as the root is dead (still damn hurts though!) then left to drain for a day or so and then the root filled..
The first one I took a while to get to the dentists with it and as it was so high up my face behind my nose I visited the doctors fits stupidly.. by the time I went the root was well and truelly rotted away. The second time I knew exactly what the problem was and went straight to the dentist who then had to pull the remains of the root out through the hole he had drilled, god that was painfull... mental note to leave it a week or so if it occurs again.. both times it swelled at Christmas time?
Anyway I avoided dentists for about four years after that and my wife persuaded me to join a new dentist and have a check up..
Went to a private one, not cheap but the service is ten fold better.. anyway she did an x-ray and noticed that the second root filling had a small cavity at the top where the roof area has rotted a bit more since the filling, or the filling was not completed properly. So she redrilled it and left it to drain for a day and refilled it and all is fine..
Sounds like your filling was not completed correctly, leaving some air in the cavity root area which has caused the gunk etc..
Join a decent practice, and they should be able to x-ray it and see what is going on and redrill the root filling and do it again.

PS: The tooth the crown is attached to will decay as it is no longer living but should no be a problem.. both my front two are surviving still after about 6years and 8 years since they died..
Although one has cracked, and due to be repaired in a couple of months time, when I can afford it.
I suspect they can check the crack in the other tooth too and advise what they can do if/when it breaks off.
Is the root is still there they can probably just crown that one too....

Sorry mate, been off the board for a bit.......
<disclaimer....said without proper examination>
You should have no problem getting sorted without recourse to a denture.
When looking for a new dentist please remember, more expensive (ie private) does not necessarily mean better, just more expensive.
If you don't like what they say, get another opinion, it can be money well spent.
Most important advice....
GET IT SORTED NOW !! Leaving it longer makes treatment less successful/more expensive

I hope that doesnt mean I have to have one of those horrible plastic things with teeth on them.
Might make some teeth myself yet with a bit of Copydex and Balsa wood

Hi there
Sorry to hear about your dental problems, sounds horrible.
An acquaintance of mine is a VERY good dentist with an international reputation. He's specialised in something only like 50 people in Europe can do. I heard some horrible stories about UK dentists; I'm sure you wouldnt want to hear them.
Anyway, just letting you know what I've been told by my friend:
- the UK have (for reasons I wont go into) the least good dentists in Western Europe (no offence DocJoc)
- the best basic dental studies are given in Germany
- best specialisation is in Germany and USA
My friend is neither German nor American nor biased. I am telling you this for your own good. Seriously. I would try and find a good dental clinic in Germany. Your teeth is not something you mess about with.
Hope this helps

Thanks again all.
Steven, sorry I never replied to your email. I could do with a dentist nearer to home really, as Heckmondwike is quite a way from me, thanks anyway. If my local dentists cant do anything, I will give him a ring though.
Claudius - you having a laff mate, Germany?

Wow, some very sweeping (and as usual, very wrong) statements there Claudius...
BTW there are good and bad in every profession in every country...when I worked in Germany I saw some appalling work, it doesn't mean I go around saying Zahnarsts are all of a poor standard.
You really should stick to subjects where you know what you are talking about.......I realise you wouldn't have much to talk about, but hey, that's life.
Right, said enough, I won't be back to respond again as I find arguing with ***** a fruitless exercise.

I'm not very impressed with dentists at the moment, I've just had a letter from mine saying he won't be treating anyone on the National Health anymore so unless you can afford to go private then you can just **** off.
What the hell is going on?

Locum? do I get paid?
The private dentist I now go to is excellent but not much good for Dream Weaver as it is in the SE.
I think it is just a better dentist, the fact that they are private as said already is probably because they wanted to earn more money etc..
Must be worth going to a recommended dentist though!? rather than just the nearest.
