Question

The other evening there were two hitchhikers trying to get a lift..

not only were there walking out in front of cars to try and be seen, but it was okay because they had there thumb out, but they did the same to me and I was on a motorcycle!?! there was two of them with lots of lugguge and no crashhelmets... what did they expect me to do? balance one on the back and one on the front?
This was approaching midnight and they were obviously getting desperate... but still!!!

Anti hitch hikers!!! why do they look so annoyed when I give them the thumbs up back?

Depends on if they're girls, how they look and if there could be someone hiding where they stand or not

People must pick them up... well they weren't there when I went past 24hours later!!

I presume people must.... otherwise they wouldn't do it.. I guess..

I have been approached in a petrol station before.. can I have a lift mate etc... no sorry going the other way <lying through my teeth>
Where do you stand legally if they turn nasty as you invited them into your car..

That's true...

Some sexy blonde in a short skirt thumbing a lift, you stop and she says thanks big boy whilst her 28stone sister gets in......

She says thanks and waves as you drive off lop sided!

I used to do a lot of mileage on my own and always picked up trade plate holders

I have had some great conversations with these fellows

The fact that I am 6'2" and weigh 19 stone usually prevents any dodgy people

Would never pick a women up I have heard terrible stories of aqusations being alledged

Hello

I have picked up one or two hitchhikers before. They were both young men.

I would NEVER pick up a single girl. Call me paranoid, but if they cry rape / sexual assault it is your word against theirs. And although you will not be found guilty, the stigma and hassle attached does not make it worth while.

Unhappy

I made the mistake of picking up a hitchhiker once. Looked like a fairly harmless guy until he got in. He was totally deranged and mumbling incoherently (without being drunk). I dropped him off at the next junction. Unless soneone looked in real distress I'd never even stop. If a woman was stranded, I'd rather call her a taxi than give her a lift. Sad indictment on society when you can't give someone a lift for fear of false accusations etc.

I pick up hitch hikers all the time, especially the one's with trade plates, as they will be delivery drivers. They have to get to where ever the next car is or back home on no travel money, they only get paid for the mileage they do in the vehicle being delivered. But I am 6ft 3inches and 20 plus stone, so I get no trouble from anyone. Once got stopped for speeding with two hitch hikers in the car, fortunately the coppers didn't see that one was perched on the folded down back seat of my car, with his legs wrapped around the cycle I was taking home.

Best thing to do is stop around 20 meters in front of them. When they come up to your car thinking that you're giving them a lift, drive off at high speed. Hilarity ensures...

Around me at the mo there are LOADS of hitchiking foreigners who are fruit picking at the farms near by. As for the statement looking like Kylie ect.....some of them are STUNNERS !

You can find most of them in the pubs making a 1/2 pint last the whole night

I have once had an interesting incident I had forgotten about until Kantana said that..

Stopped in a layby and a hitchhiker thought I was giving him a lift and he got annoyed when I got out and locked the car and walked to the burger van..

Could have been interesting had I stopped and without getting out and find him get in the back etc...

Worries me somewhat... Doesn't matter if you're 20 stone and built like a brick sh!thouse if you're strapped to your seat and they happen to go mental with sharp things

As for the 'cry rape' scenario, now they have no hope (at least getting a lift from me anyhow!)

Done both sides...

Once for a "test"/jolly thing, hitch-hiked from London to Glasgow, across to Edinburgh & back to London again...

Started 13:00 @ Staples Corner on a Sat & ended Hanger Lane 19:00 on the Sunday Work it out Many stories to go with it, but walked approx 20 miles on Sun v.early AM from Dunbar towards Berwick ( ) - oh & managed to get to Hexham on the way too

On the other side, I've often picked up hitchers/platers as I used to be a plater too. Still would do if I liked the look/feel.

Not a problem as I'm 5'8" & 10 stone 7 wet

Only dodgy time I had was with some birdy who I picked up @ Watford Gap (on her way to Glasgow) took her to J28 services M1 (on my way to Leeds), she changed her mind (& I thought I was in ) took her back to London, then went back up to Leeds that day & she changed her mind again...

Took £15 as well

In Ireland there are lots of hitchers but then its not as oppressive/dangerous as over here.
