Thumbs up Hitchhikers

Does anyone else pick up hitchhikers? I've always done it because I used to rely on it to get me to and from my girlfriends/friends/family when I was a hard up student and dole scrounger.
I'm curious because last week I picked up 2 very good looking girls who were on the way to a holiday picking grapes. Had I been free and single an invite was extended to me to join them and do some partying afterwards. They also shared their lunch with me and gave me a kiss goodbye when I dropped them off.
My altruism was thus rewarded and I was left with a glowing feeling all day (I won't say what or where was glowing). Not all my experiences of picking up folk have been as good as that but generally I've picked pretty decent sorts.
I plan to keep picking up hitchers till I get some nutcase and decide never to talk to any strangers ever again.

Should have added they said it was the fastest/scariest lift they've ever had.

What, you mean 2 pretty girls and all the grapes one could eat?

PS each thread view with no reply is just like watching the cars go past when you are at the side of the road.

I like picking up hitchikers. Then asking them if they want to see something really SCARY. Funnily enough they usually ask to be let out just before I get the chance to show them my CD collection.

I've always wondered about the blokes that stand at the side of the road thumbing for a lift when they're holding a number plate? I think they're delivery drivers who've dropped off a vehicle?

They are called trade platers (as you surmise they deliver vehicles)and "real hitchikers" don't like them because they always try to nick your lifts. Personally I'll give them a lift as they are usually decent sorts. If not I just punt them out at the nearest available safe place.

My girlfriend does read scoobynet, she even posts on here. I'd like to add the story is 100% true and I didn't do anything with or even think of doing anything with those two pretty, firm looking girls

As well as picking up the odd hitchiker (although I hardly ever see one), I've hitched round france, spain and portugal in my 'yoof' so I've been on both sides of the fence as it were. Met some great people (and the odd wierdo - we obviously got on LOL ). As to picking them up, you can only really make a decision at the time, use your instinct etc. There are nutters (hitchers and drivers alike) but this is not the norm, like I say use your instinct. If in doubt, smile politely and drive on. Certainly more likely to give a lift if I've already got a mate with me etc.

An old boyfriend I was with back in the eighties used to insist on picking up hitchhikers as he'd been a hitcher himself during his university days. He always insisted that I sit in the back seat and the hitcher in the front passenger seat so I could keep an eye on them during the journey which was a bit of a pain in the bum for me.

We stopped for a normal looking (from a distance) young guy on the M1 at Scratchwood Services early one evening and, it wasn't until he was in the car that we noticed he had blood on his clothing and a couple of cuts on his face. He wasn't carrying any luggage or a jacket and this, coupled with the blood, made us feel really uncomfortable even though he seemed friendly enough. I quickly asked him about the blood on his shirt and the cuts on his face and he claimed that he'd been mugged at Victoria Station and had had his rucksack nicked (he was an Aussie tourist) and was waiting for his father to wire him some money across. I really wanted to believe him but my instinct was screaming 'murderer!' When we asked him where he was going at that time of night he said he wanted to visit his grandmother's grave in a village near Northampton before he flew back to Oz. We completed the journey with me keeping the chat really friendly and giving him lots of sympathy for the ordeal he'd been through to keep him sweet and not to wind him up or anything, I think we even gave him some cash! Eventually we dropped him off at dusk at one of the services which he said was near the village. Phew.

After he'd gone me and the ex both agreed that it was a really strange time of day to be visiting your grandmother's grave and we were both felt that there was something not right about him and his story, although he was intelligent, articulate and friendly neither of us felt convinced. We were both quite glad to be shot of him before it got dark tbh

After that wierd little experience my ex never stopped for a hitchhiker again, well not whilst I was in the car with him anyway

We (wife and I ) picked up two German girls earlier this year in Ireland - both decent enough, but very tired, clearly trusted us as they promptly fell asleep in back of scoob.

Have picked up a smelly old cvnt in the past, who constantly sponged **** off me in the past though - put me right off - so am a bit more choosy now. Long haired hippy types are usually a good bet if you like a bit of smoke.

I have seen young girls hitchiking and wonder if I should give them a lift so no pervert can get hold of them! But I never do because they may be crazy themselves!

What goes through the minds of young girls when they're hitchiking alone!? Are they not asking for trouble?

I only have ever picked up one hitcher, but I had a mate in the car at the time. He was a squaddie so he had a kit bag which he put in the boot, with a great big thud and it looked really heavy. On the journey he seemed really nice so my mate asked him what was in the kit bag, he replied "mind your own f******** business". I laughed it off but a little later I was curious and asked him again with the same curt answer.

I decided that he wasn't so nice and we dropped him off at the next services, whilst making our excuses. The irony was that we discovered he'd left the bag in the car when we got to our destination

Never again,

F

lol @ harry boy, thought exactly the same, always considered it but then thought nar, didnt wanna pick up some annoying bugger who wouldnt shut up talking about something wierd or something and ruining my own journey...

The guys with the number plates are generally good people, as said they're working, just dropped a motor off but they are paid something silly like £200+ to get home but the tight ar$es pocket the cash and try to thumb a lift back and use the number plates to show that they aint weirdos just normal working people hoping for a lift home......

Some great stories on this thread already,

my best ever lift: 6pm nr Scotch Corner having left Newcastle trying to get to Glastonbury for the festival the following day. Got picked up by a VW camper with a couple on their way to said festival. Shared our 'supplies' with them to while away the journey. It turned out they had a beer fridge which was full (not for long). It also turned out they were performing there, so they just drove straight into the festival while we sat in the back. As we had no tickets this was a bonus. They then told us we could sleep under their awning as we had no tent. They even gave us a lift back up to Sunderland. Result

Worst ever lift: Psycho HGV driver who revealed he had a large bag of credit cards "taken straight from the post" which he was selling for £100 each. He offered me a discount, got angry when I didn't want one and then asked me if I'd like to spend some time with him in his quarters above the cab. No thanks!
