Unhappy

Got in today to find one of the units has a crack running in the outer glass from top right to bottom left. No sign of an impact and the window had not been slammed shut. Windows are about 2yrs old. Any reasons why this could happen ?

Dave.

Question

The window does have a proper lintel over it doesn't it? If there isn't then the weight of the wall above will be resting on the window frame.

It could of been glazed incorrectly, if you can remove the gasket and beading have a look and see if the glass is sitting correctly on the plastic packers which are used to line the sash up with the frame. Could also be a screw that is standing proud of the frame in the sash which over time has put pressure on the sealed unit, or the wrong length of screw has been used to secure the hinge to the sash. Could be any number of things really. Sorry I can't be any more help, but I have not worked with double glazing for over 13 years so my memory on the subject is a bit rusty.

That made me feel old! has it really been 13 years!

Regards ian

Just had a thought most companies give a long guarantee on there work but use the old get out of independent installers to fit the windows, so that they can blame any arising faults on them.

As above but also is the window in part shade at all? The build up of thermal stresses can cause the glass to break. It could just be a freak breakage which can happen.
