a friend of mine has bought one (2nd hand) recently, just a twin diesel engine job - (no rag and stick) cost him 40k (his Dad put up half) and spent almost every day of its life since he bought it in the boat engineers workshop being repaired!

Just waiting for him to get it on the water again for some trips to france!

so got me wondering if anyone here has one?

My wife's cousin told me recently, when we were discussing the possibility of getting a boat, that they suck up money for very little return.

The advice given by a very wealthy friend of his (who'd been through a bitter divorce) was that "if it floats, flies or f**ks, you're better off renting!"

Got a mate with a 25" sports cruiser, 16" RIB and 24" racing yacht, no need for me to get a boat

Seriously though, a 24" yacht is like standing in the shower tearing up £20 notes, the power boat is £50s.
For a 40 footer you are gonna need a big shower

The sports cruiser is for sale at the moment, anyone feeling rich?

It's not just the cost either, finding someone who is good and reliable to service engines or maintain yacht is incredibly hard, everyone we have used on the racing yacht has been next to useless.

i've a 21ft SeaRay,with a mercruiser v8 in the back ,Awesome boat seats eight too!!And will pull two of my daft mates on water toys.

Used to have a Fletcher 160GTO with a 90hp Yamaha O/B which we used for skiing. We cpompletely retrimmed the interior and rebuilt the trailor - used to compare it with standing in the shower and setting fire to twenty pound notes, cost a fortune to run, great fun just a lotta cash and work!

BTW - Had a BIG problem with the outboard, the previous owner had welded the final drivehasft (one with the prop on) back together, no uncommon if the bottom of the engine has contacted something solid. the only option was to buy a new one, cost should have been around £ 800.00 + fitting, Got the boatyard who sold it to us to do it in the end under threat of suing them!

We've got a 60' narrowboat It's got a big old vintage diesel twin cylinder 8000cc (yes 8000!) Kelvin K2 engine, gives 44bhp @ 750rpm and masses and masses of torque

It's not really suitable for sea use though but goes bloody well on the canals

We've got a 33 foot Beneteau sailing yacht. Costs just over £2k a year to keep . Fuel costs are negligble as we only use the engine for getting in and out of port and then it only sniffs the stuff.

sail an 18ft skiff, and a 49er. Both are incredible boats, the skiff can hit 30+ kts in the right conditions Absolutely amazing bit of kit!

I bought a boat last week, a Pirate MI 21 fast fishing boat, 150hp volvo-penta turbodiesel, gives 32knots. It was only built in january, so I thought it would be relatively maintenance free, but I've had to fit extra grab handles on the roof, no-slip deck tread, bigger cleats and relpace the fuel gaugue sender which involves fitting a hatch in the deck as the sender was fitted before the deck was glassed in! Once that's done I'll be able to get to france in about an hour and a bit! It's similar to this thing:- http://www.essexmarina.co.uk/seaeagle.htm
Boats are a hole you throw money into, but at least with a powerboat you're only looking at regular fuel and service costs. A yacht has more to go wrong in my opinion.

seriously have just got back from flotilla sailing in the south Ionians and had the best holiday ever.
especially when you think we had a v pleasant week in a 38 foot (thats feet not inches rich ) Moody for a few hundred then just handed it back with out a care in the world
No insurance to pay no depreciation no all year mooring fees no maintenance No worrying if its been blown away (or nicked) while your not their.

And ive got a nice little dinghy to sail when i go to North wales at weekends which is securley garaged.

PS "Gin palace" motor cruisers are for wimps try a 28 foot bilge keeler of non descript origin with one keel coming loose in a force 8/9 in the irish sea against a lee shore and no pilot book or decent chart.

Like all sailors I have a hat full of horror stories.

dnb thats nice what is she looks very traditional

i have alawys hankered after a Swan 57 (for those not in the know thats not a large box of matches just a very big very beautiful racing yacht)
oh and a bank balance to match.

She's not mine unfortunately - belongs to my girlfriend and her father.

Always fancied a J class myself. (And the lotto superdraw win to finance it...)

I think there are only half a dozen genuine j class boats left in the world i think they still hold records for the amount of canvas to hull ratio.
I suppose the swans are a kind of cut down version of the j class boats.

I've got a 18ft Spirit speedboat with 140hp Suzuki outboard, haven't used it for a couple of years but have had a lot of great fun with it. It could pull 5 or 6 waterskiers together from a water start.

It never really cost a lot, we bought the hull for £800 (it had been sunk) and managed to pick up a great outboard from the local Suzuki agent, it was an old housing and gearbox but with a brand new power head and cost about a 1/5th of a brand new complete unit.

One of my best mates has crewed on an Oyster 56 and all I can say when I saw one at the Southampton show was WOW!

I also liked Eddie Ervines Sunseeker i didn't know he was wealthy?
