Well, after wwp8's experience in nottingham about half a mile from my home I went searching and I found these links:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1877000/1877282.stm
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=%2Fnews%2F2002%2F02%2F06%2Fnmug106. xml
http://www.bbc.co.uk/crime/prevention/carjack.shtml
http://www.spiked-online.com/Articles/00000002D427.htm
In a nuthsell; the police have no official recognition of carjacking. Only "aggravated taking and driving away".
Also their advice if a carjack is attempted, is to stay in your car, and if possible drive to nearest police station to then report the crime.
...fat lot of use that would have been for wwp8 who was boxed in by THREE cars and had to ram his way out of it.
he was lucky to get away let alone not be chased back to his destination..
this makes me quite mad and there are no (that I could find) legal precendents in the UK re: carjacking and related law...
so its a fair bet that if you try to defend your life and car you will end up in legal grief in the aftermath... grrr
HE was VERY lucky.
EDITED to correct a few typos..

I understand your anger.
When all is said and done, if you find yourself in that situation I guess you do whatever you can do protect yourself and deal with the legalities after.
If it meant saving my life, I wouldn't think twice about going down for a few years. You may be locked up, but at least you're alive.
