regional salary/property variations
#1
a few recent threads discuss the price of property and the variations in salary.
if properties in the SE are 3-4 times the cost of other areas, do the jobs pay 3-4 times the money? i doubt it.
public sector workers for example, have a national agreement and only a handful of employees (living in london) get and supplement for expensive accomodation.
the cheshire average salary is 25k. is the average salary in the SE 100k?
Stu.

like for like jobs are prob not that different but its the avalibility of higher paid jobs in the south that does (i assume) make a difference.
for example, i sell stuff and in the south can earn 100-120k on a 4 day wk.....i'd struggle to do the same further north (but my house would be cheaper! )

that's hit the nail on the head - the point is people have the choice where they live. If you think the standard of living is so much better up north then move. If you're happy in the south then stay there, don't whinge the grass is greener.
If salaries were so much higher down south then people would flock there, pushing house prices even higher.
The real issue is shortage of housing supply. Messing with financial factors around this (e.g. stamp duty) are merely clumsy attempts to address symptoms of the problem. Feels like time to build loads of modern attractive tower blocks to me. Perhaps they could double as hose drying facilities for local fire brigades at the same time!

Tiggs *could* earn that much... But not whilst BB is on 'cos he clearly spends the entire day either - watching it, surfing the web to read about it or posting on here about it
