Somewhere around Broad Street (especially if you want the night-life), or "The MailBox" - but i think that the prices are quite high!

Loads of bars and restaurants, 5 minutes from the city centre, lovely canals, International Convention Centre, Symphony Hall, Sealife Centre, National Indoor Arena etc.

First step try http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/ and drill down the "community pages". A list of some of the developments include (from the web-site)...
