Flu - why aren't we panicking about this?
A conservative estimate of deaths attributable to the flu this year, in the US alone, is 10 to 16 thousand.
Why isn't this headline news when coronavirus is?

I'm in 2 mins about Corona.
one side I hear it's like flu and already sick people will be the most affected. The other side is videos in China of wards of dead people. Cars being stopped in the road, temp taking and then the person being dragged to a van.
is the Western world playing it down to reduce panic and fear?
My wifes company have stopped anyone travelling to China for the foreseeable future and are getting everyone out.
I just want my iPhones made 😬

Far far too much hysterical reporting
More deaths in the USA this year alone from common flu. some 16,000 desths
Just a couple of years ago in the UK the death rate for flu was 28,000 in one season. average death rate from flu in the UK is 17,000
These deaths rates could be reduced by helping those with respiratory disease by reducing local pollution from vehicles and industry

Neither does the Corona virus!
The difference is the old people get flu jabs each year for normal flu and their immune system is generally tolerant to it any way. With Corona (or any new virus), there is no immunisation and nobody has a natural resistance. The death rate is lower than SARS was, but in comparison Corona is highly infectious so is spreading extremely quickly.
While many people die from flu each year, the mortality rate is extremely low, possibly around 0.03% in a bad year, so for Corona with a mortality rate of around 0.4%, you are significantly more likely to be killed by it than the common flu, even if the chances are still extremely low!
Oh, and of course the British press loves nothing more than to scare the **** out of the public

IIRC was a recent flu jab proven to be ‘faulty’ as being ineffective against the common strains of virus around at the time, resulting in a significant and large rise in the death rate as a consequence. Quoted at being between 4000 and 50,000 depending on which tabloid you read!
Yet really, once reported, it faded out the headlines pretty quick. Little or no inquiry by politicians or follow up was published. Seems like it was shrugged off as ‘s**t happens’.
Cue conspiracy theories that the Russians released it in China to crush Western economies by killing their main supply chain!

Your own immune system remembers what it has previously fought, so you can never get the same strain of flu again. If the mutations are small from what you have already had, then you may see mild flu symptoms for each new strain, but you won't get full blown flu symptoms due to your body already having partial immunity from previous similar strains. Its only in the case of significant mutation that you'll ever really get full on flu!
In the case of Corona, it is essentially also a flu virus, but a strain which is unrelated from anything our bodies have previously had to deal with, so there is far less chance that when we catch it, our bodies can cope with it before we develop severe flu symptoms. It does however seem that this virus is not particularly aggressive, so a healthy immune system can deal with it quickly enough in most people that only relatively mild symptoms are experienced.

The WHO claim global flu mortality is as high as 650k people a year. That is an astonishingly high number of deaths in comparison to corona and sars etc yet no one bats an eyelid if someone has flu. Even more serious and probably the most deadly infectious disease on the planet right now is ebola and again there is no hysteria in the news about that because if the press publicised ebola as much as they have corona there would be mass hysteria from the worrying about what ebola does to you and how infectious it is. Thankfully the experts are doing a damn good job of containing it in central Africa but it's a constant threat as it's never eradicated. I'm just waiting for the various terrorist organisations to get hold of ebola or even coronavirus and spread it in highly populated areas.

Then we have norovirus, estimated at 200,000 deaths and rotovirus is around 400,000 (mostly children).
Caught that last year on an overnight ferry and yeah, it’s s**t (literally), I can see how it could kill if you are already weak or an infant. Even now I suffer consequences; My once cast iron stomach appears to be now intolerant of fish

I hate our press/media, BBC/ITV/ Channel 4 and all of the papers. Absolute **** stiring, panic merchants who if, god forbid, we ever had to deal with anything really serious, will be a massive danger to our order, safety and security.
They're peddlers of myths, rumours, half truths and outright lies.
I think 'our' press undermines our communities and the country as a whole.
Will there be a backlash against these sinister, insidious organisations? I hope so.

At times of public concern you would expect the BBC, PAID FOR BY US ALL, to be a moderator against the dearth of crap that spews from social media and 'lesser' media outlets.
However, it is with a very heavy heart that I can confirm that moderate/balanced reporting is dead and hurriedly covered in a shallow grave by the BBC.
