Problem, need help......

Citizen's Advice might be able to give better help, but my gut feel is that he would be put straight away on emergency tax.
If he's got not books, and all earnings are cash in hand, he can't be stung for a specific amount of back taxes 'cos there's no audit trail. But I reckon he'd have to pay *something* backdated.
It's an interesting case alright, you could almost make a documentary about it, something like "the man who wasn't there". Now that's not a bad idea -- at least he'd get some dosh (cash in hand of course).

Just a thought whilst playing devils advocate but why should he now be entitled to a state pension when he hasn't made a single contribution and doesn't beleive in handouts anyway?

Tough sh$t. Why should I have to pay high taxes to compensate for some sponging guy like this. If he hasnt paid then he should not be entitled to anything.
On the other hand they'll probably give him a home and some dosh to live on. If they dont then tell him to go to France and catch a ferry back. When he gets to Dover say his name is Vladivar Vostok or something and claim political asylum. Then theyll give him loads of things.
Better still do what the afghans did a while ago. Hijack a plane. Hell then spend months in a 4* hotel in Heathrow and be given spending money. Cynical maybe but why not. Good wnough for some.
Chip.

Agree that he should get nothing!
If he has managed to not pay tax for this long he should have thought about what would happen when he cannot work...
I am sure he probably has enough cash under his matteress so why should us tax payers allow him not to spend his matteress savings..
well out of order..
But if you happen to want me to have a chat with him and advice then let me know what his name and address is??

Agreed, tough $h1t.
He should get nothing. Nobody likes paying taxes but its an essential part of any economy and if you want to reclaim what little benefit is on offer (state pension) then you have to pay up like everyone else.
You don't something for nothing in this life. In one way or another he's going to lose out big-time. My advice would be accept the fact that he's not going to get a pension or come clean and pay the consequences.

Inland Revenue can only sting you for 6 years' worth of taxes (that's how far back their records go). HM Customs & Excise is 7 years, IIRC.
PS: Agreed, he should get nothing. Should have taken out a private pension or paid into the state one
