Default If you hate watches and watch talk....

Stay out of the thread...please!

Went to see some wealthy clients in London recently and they slagged my longines off. I love it! Simple and clear. He had a Jaegre le le Coultre thing

1. I thought it was rude
2. Longines came before JLC
3. Watches you might think are naff are any sort of rolex tat
4. The only really expensive watch worth owning is a Patek
5. Off to centre Parks next week and will be using my Casio W800 which, really is the perfect watch, for your whole life £14.00

Ignorant person

I have a Rolex Oyster from the 1950's -- definitely not 'tat' (although current stuff is 'naf'..!)

I used to love watches and have a bit of a 'cheapo' collection but without a doubt Casio do some of the best watches out there for under 20 quid used to wear them for work and still have one I bought about 5yrs ago in the garage and it still works.

As for the no66er that commented on your watch.... just pity the fool... you have to be pretty pathetic to do something like that.

I have a 60's Oyster perpetual ; it's all bull****... At a recent service ££££££, I was told the steel bracelet was dangerously worn, but they couldn't give me a price at the weekend because the price of metal fluctuates, but it would be about £ 2200. You have to buy in to the investment theory, literally.
They are not tough either. Casino or Seiko diver for work watches.
Sorry, but despite owning a Rolex, when I see someone with an expensive watch I just think nice but MUG.

A good watch is nice to own but if watch survivabilty is in question I strap on a Casio G-Shock which I've had for 20+ years. It never goes wrong, seems unbustable and cost about £50.

I've a 1973 Air-King which I wear all of the time; was left to me by my grandfather. Being entry level it's subtle and doesn't feel ostentatious. It's due new glass and I'm toying with the idea of replacing the acrylic with sapphire. Thoughts?

I have an Elliot Brown Canford.
Every time someone admires it I warn them to beware of expensive imitations.

I wear a G shock and love their accuracy and robustness.

I'd never slag off anything that somebody was wearing, that's just plain rude. However truth be told Longines are crap

Haha, I've had cars that cost less than some Longines watches. But they were crap too!

Another tick for G-shock here. I bought mine in 2002 and it has literally been through everything, all over the world, submerged in all sorts, a couple of wars, dropped from heights, banged around left right and centre, been in just about every single environment it could go in, and all it's needed is a new battery, I'm even on the original strap (just). Still accurate, light works fine, perfect working condition. Best £120 I've ever spent!

Rolex are the best bang for buck $500 dive watch you can buy. Shame they throw in $5000 of marketing as well though. Anyway, I much prefer Omega and have been collecting them for years. Seamasters have a lovely quality about them and are not all samey as Rolex Subs. For a beater though, I agree, G Shock are errrrrr hard to beat.

I like the cheaper Casio's mostly because I don't like big watches, as long as it's got light, alarm and date I'm good... then at 20 quid a pop when the battery dies I just get a new one... straps are usually about done for too about the same time.

But don't bother with watches these days as I have my phone with me all the time.

Last time I wore a watch was my Raymond Weil dress watch to a wedding and that was last September, don't even know where it is now.

Submits post...runs off to find it.

Their hq is here in Poole, and the Canford is named after the area in Poole where I live, so must be expensive!

Of course, but I've heard that when you really make it you get to move to Bloxworth!

I've got one of those as well. Both ranges are incredible value, English designed and Elliot Brown's customer service is superb.

True, and sufficient, no doubt, if you're after a timepiece.

But a watch can also be an item of jewellery, an accessory, a symbol of status, image and arguably, - and this is the OP's point in starting this thread - taste.

I have a phone with me at all times but would never be without my watch, I feel naked without it. There is also the convenience, I don't want to have to get my phone out of my pocket every time I want to know what the time is.

I don't know much about watches tbh. Are Omegas as well built as a Rolex?

At some point I really should get a 'decent' watch'.
