Got a quote from a Car reg company as I was thinking of selling my reg plate. Came back with a price of £650. Fair enough, I thought, maybe just wait to see if I can sell it with the car.
On said company website tonight and see a plate listed exactly the same apart from 1 number out - instead of *** 8Y it was *** 9Y.
For £1230!!!! What are these guys playing at. I know they have to make a profit but 100%. Nice business if you can get it.
Rant off

keep in mind its one thing advertising at a price and its another for someone to buy it at that price.
Cheers

U could try to sell yours in the Sunday times privately and ask a grand, what does it prove ?

They like a 'healthy' margin these companies.. Looked on one website, plate I wanted was 670 notes.. got the same from dvla for 250.. so for the privilege of buying it from the dvla, (which was so easy) they wanted 420 notes!!
Crazy thing is, if it had been say 500 notes I would probably have gone for it, but their greed priced them out of the market.

Think you miss the point a bit. Not a case of fools with more money than sense. I've got 2 plates - one of which has appreciated by 60% over 2 years and the other by 100% over 4 years. A bit better than my Isa has done.
I bought them as a way to make the car look better and hopefully earn a few quid as well. What p*sses me off is these companies trying to get a margin that is highway robbery.
Still who cares. Leave it on the car for a while longer.

it's not really a 100% profit (and is much less than the mark-ups put on by most retail companies) - this is only gross margin. by the time they've knocked off overheads such as wages, premises, systems, advertising etc as well as cost of capital (interest), the won't be making a huge net margin.
