Default What are you giving up for lent

I'm in a predominantly catholic country, so quite a few of my mates are giving up stuff for lent as it's quite traditional here.

I was thinking I'd do alcohol a few weeks back and just kind of went with it there and then, just over 3 weeks now and going to keep going until lent is over, also included bread now as my actual 40 dayer... day 2 and counting.

Anyone else giving something a miss for 40 days ?

I know it's a contradiction... but... I'm not really doing it in the 'name' of religion... it's just a convenient time to do it really with others... and provides a start and finish point to aim for... also like the idea of going beyond the traditional 1 month detox thing.

I gave up alcohol because once I started thinking about it I couldn't remember a time when I'd been without it for more than a week in something like 30yrs... which made me question my resolve... so thought fu@k it I'll do it now.

Same as Ramadan and Ede really, no doubt we stole it from the Muslims, like everything else.

Ah I thought it was the Muslim thing but now you've said it I recognise the Ramadan thing.
So the lent is totally giving up something(anything?) for 40 days or can you do the thing you give up at night time like the Muslims do?

No it's giving something up, the Muslim thing is fasting... but not really... most just swap day for night in my experience... that said, I have met a few hard core ones that really do fast... one guy I was on a dirt bike safari with in the south sinai desert... hot as hell and he didn't have a drop of water all day... nothing passed his lips from 6am until he heard the sound from the Mosque... then he drank about a gallon of water.

That's dedication.

Lobster tails - then again, I don't have them so often in any 40 day period - let alone during Lent!

Not really, he probably woke up at 4am and filled his boots until dawn... so first 4/5hrs he probably wouldn't have drank much anyway...then we're all out of the sun... rest of us having lunch and a bit of a chill out for a couple of hours and back on the bikes/quads... I was the only customer on a bike and maybe 15 quads so he was with me all day.... we'd shoot off and do some bike trails and then rejoin the pack... I was expecting him to cheat when we were alone... but he didn't... which is why the memory stayed.

Proper definition of lent - Ditchmyster was close - hahahaha

What is Lent?

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar.

Christians who observe Lent use it as a time for prayer and penance. By observing Lent, Christians are remembering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who withdrew into the wilderness and fasted for 40 days before his crucifixion.

Traditionally, pancakes are eaten on the day before Ash Wednesday to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk before the 40-day fasting season of Lent begins.
