one often overlooked Castro/Cuban initiative was using its impressive health service (it has better health outcomes than most developed countries) to provide medical assistance for "really" poor countries in world
in any international disaster often the fist medical aid will be Cuban doctors
"Missions abroad are intended to provide services at low cost to the host country. "Patients are not charged for services, and the recipient countries are expected to cover only the cost of collective housing, air fare, and limited food and supplies not exceeding $200 a month. While Cuban doctors are abroad, they continue to receive their salaries as well as a stipend in foreign currency."[2] Pay for Cuban doctors abroad, while much higher than at home ($23 per month) is still low by international standards ($183 per month)."

Castro/Cuba - not perfect, no one is, but better than Saudi Arabia

I always think of the classic Nineteen by Paul Hardcastle, when I hear Che Guevara (as in the song's Ronald Reagan sample).
EDIT: I'm getting my 80s song's mixed up! I meant the War (what is it good for?) cover, by FGTH. Said RR sample was a spoof (I think), voiced by Chris Barrie.

Lizzy's aunty loves all that stuff. Her late consultant husband volunteered for Médecins Sans Frontières and she's an absolute classic champagne socialist! I'm rather fond of her, but after a few drinks I like nothing better than to imitate her absurdly posh accent whilst espousing the value of the proles.
yes, I read a really good piece about "champagne socialism" a few years ago
the central point being that it is used as a somewhat pejorative term to isolate the poor and disadvantaged, a sort of soft serengeti strategy
but I do accept it can get irritating to be constantly berated by Bono Sting and DiCaprio et al
everything from poverty to climate change
it is said of Sting - that he does so much good work for a planet he no longer lives on

an old friend of mine was director of MSF - I think to stop autocracy you can only be director for a year

All these perjorative terms are flawed of course, but they do paint a picture. Engels owned the means of production, but I wouldn't have called him a champagne socialist. Aunty Sally (I do a cracking Wurzul impression when inebriated) is no Engels, though. She goes on about bloomin' Palestine and the homeless and any other cause célèbre that might adorn the pages of the Guardian. She wouldn't go somewhere on the Med. the other month due to the "appalling plight" of drowning refugees. I get all of it, but it somehow irks me and, as you say, one can't help but think it's all a bit Bonoesque. I do love her though and she has a certain class - will see her at the cottage in Yarpole this Christmas. There'll be quite staggering consumption and an embarrassment of riches and she'll love every minute of it!

Bad timing or what.......
Well guess where my sister is having saved up for a mid-winter break. Correct Cuba
Not going to be much fun there! Been trying to get in touch with her about something else but no mobile calls although texting seems to work - odd.
