I've just put a sticky number plate on the front of the Lotus...the original kept grounding out over anything larger than an envelope Before I put it on I asked 2 MOT testers and a Class One Police Traffic officer on their legality... both MOT testers said they were happy to give a car with a sticky plate an MOT as long as it was full size, and the Police Officer didnt know whether they were legal but said as long as they were full size and in correct font he didnt ever have a problem with them and wouldnt "do" anyone for it...

Just read this on the FAQ page of the above site:
"Are stick-on number plates legal?
No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements."
Like Rich says tho' most coppers would be happy to ignore it or don't realise it's not 100% legal, I know my copper mates would turn a blind eye unless the person driving was being a complete w4nker
The only potential problem I could see would be some little ****** pulling it off the car
I like them tho' and think they look cool

Look at all the factory fresh Jags, Minis, Midgets, Sprites, Etc, from the 60's & 70's they all came with stick on plates and I see a hell of a lot of MkI MX-5's with square ones on the corner of the bonnet (Elan style). As far as I am aware they are legal, so long as they are the correct colour, size and font.
P.S. As an aside, iit true that digital speed cameras cannot read square plates?

BIG thanks to all who helped with this question.
Once again my single brain cell missed the obvious - look at the DVLA site !!! (doh!)
Looks like I need to check why they don't meet the "requirements" or whether this is just a generalised fob off to put people off.
I well remember the stick ons on the cars I had in the 60's 70's etc (including 5 assorted Lotus - Richard - do they still need the net to tow behind to catch the bits that vibrate off ??! )but I was less bothered then as the legislation did not seem to be as tight as now (EEC rules etc ?)
Thanks again
Stan
Edited as I have now read the "requirements" and see nothing that a stick on would fail on.
I wait for that view to be corrected by someone more knowledgable !!

Could some kind and knowledgable person please direct me to the web pages I saw/read last year (or earlier !) which gave the full sp on all the legal regulations about number plates - including stick-ons.
I seem to remember they were illegal - but could well be wrong.
Cheers
Stan
