Question

Anyone any experience running small TVs (14") off a portable generator ? - Anything I should be careful of ?

Hoping to run a TV rated at 37W and Sky Digibox at 0.3 Amps So I reckon thats not much over (240x0.3) + 37 = 109 KVA ? (Should there be a root 2 in there to convert Watts to VA ?)

Hoping to hire a small generator (HSS do a 550 KVA one) to run a Digibox and TV whilst out of reach of mains for the footie next weekend.

No, No, No!!!

Mixed up W & kVA

TV = 37W (seems low)
Sky = 240*0.3 = 72W

Total = 109Watts!!! not kVA (kilo volt amperes)
No root 2 needed!

By the way a 50Hz, 550kVA generator would be the size of your garage!

You could run these of a car battery with a suitable inverter to convert it back to 50hz AC! If u use a generator, you will have to have an engine to drive it!

Just make sure you get one of the quiet generators, or a long extention.... most are 110v so make sure its 240v as well... better off getting a bigger generator so you can run electric fire knowing our weather!

it has inverter written on the side

looks somewhat similar to

HTH

and if it doesnt i don't care

p.s. mate alligned his minidish in switzerland by pointing it south and hoping , and 10 mins of fiddling. (he gets a better signal than i do at home!!)

p.s. wots wrong with a local establishment for watching the footy?

Spent an hour in the garden last night practicing.

Have an old 60cm dish from the house I've juts moved to. A small length of Dig sat grade coax had it hooked up to the digibox. I used to live in a small rented place where I couldn't mount a dish on the roof so have a 2ft ground mount pole.

Spent 30 mins faffing arounf failing to get a signal, then realised the compass didnt like the granite rockery next to me. Then realised the trees were too low. Now I've got the right elevation set on the bracket I can swing the dish with the compass and get it straight away

I'll be at Le Mans - so if we come second - I dont want to have to rely on finding a tele on Sat lunch time - If we win the group then it 7.30 sunday morning and I expect we wont be in a fit state to drive anywhere

plus the french might be sulking and not bother with any big screens

Astra 2A&B north footprint covers most of france, south footprint goes down well into spain. Astra 2D is more limited but should still be fine in northern France. 60cm Dish should be good for anything down to southern spain aswell. Taking UK generator (can I run it on Optimax). Card has aboslutley no notion of where It is - only where I live for billing purposes.

Many happy caravanners () have pioneered the taking of digiboxes abroad so there are no issues

Jack - you at LeMans ? - If so we're in the Houx annex (apparently) in the large circle of tents around a satellite dish . Pop over for a stubby and the football

If the genny needs an earth spike make sure it has one, and it's stuck in wet ground (**** on it). A colleague of mine saw what happened when a 3-phase fairground genny had all it's load on one phase and the earth came disconnected. The thing threw itself over 2 parked cars!
