Default Just a cold? Or something worse?

Ongoing 15 days now, nose streaming, alternately one side or the other, both eyes swollen and sore from them running, sneezing up to 18 times in a row, breathing rattling in my chest and coughing loads, plus when I cough, I get a searing pain in my right eye that feels like someone punched it.

Being as it's gone on so long, is a visit to a doctor advisable?

Yes let's ask a car forum full of people who have no qualified expertise to advise you....

It's probably a brain tumour. Also explains the gloomy disposition.

ive had a bug for weeks and weeks and it just wont go away. engineer in my factory had it first and has infected the whole factory. worst cold/bug ive had in years and everyone is saying the same. i had pains in my chest when coughing and rattly breathing like yourself. went to docs but it was clearing up by then and he sounded my chest etc and said it sounded clear but gave me some pills. i thought it was a chest infection as my chest felt so tight. a farmer friend of mine says they have lost more lambs and calves this year than they have for years and thinks the mild winter failed to kill off a lot of the bugs that a frosty/snowy winter and thaw would normally do. another friend has just had a new baby and had to take her to hospital as they had this bug and passed it on to the baby who was in some distress with coughing and her breathing. doc visit wouldnt do any harm.

LOL, at some of the replies.

I asked on here as it broadens the pool of folk who MIGHT have experience, or know someone who has. Not because I reckon that a load of car-oriented folk would actually know what was wrong.

I actually asked if anyone thought a visit to the doc was worth it...I hate wasting the doc's time, but have had a couple of tellings off for NOT going with chest infections that ended up as quite serious bronchitis, and almost into pneumonia.

Seriously...how the hell does a layman know if he has a cough...or bronchitis? And how serious it is?

If you have it on your chest go to the doctors as you might have an infection.

Sore eyes and cold like symptoms does suggest hayfever, pop an an Antihistamine tablet to see if things clear.

You also may have Non-allergic rhinitis, which is one on my many ailments, it's causes me to sneeze randomly and my eyes to get irritated. It can last 3 seconds to 3 months.

I've never developed a cough with hayfever or rhinitis afaik. So get to the GP.

If hayfever is bad enough it can. When mine is realy bad i get a post nasal drip, (mucas running down the back of your throat) which causes me to cough alot.

The drugs im on take a good few weeks to kick in, so been back on them a week or so and they are slowly starting to take affect. Im on pretty much the strongest stuff you an get even via prescription

I'm just getting over a week of flu, apparently swine flu is going around here and I suspect that was it as I've never had flu quite like it, truly awful.

Cheers for "some" sensible replies.

I've never had hayfever, so maybe not?

As for doc, it'll have to wait until thursday now, no car tomorrow and they are closed wednesdays for training.

That's what I thought !

and not so much tree pollen around , yet , either ?

Had about weeks worth of cold/flu about month ago , didn't get to chest ( cant even remember last one those thankfully) , but was pretty painful in the head anyway - as far I could make out it was slightly blocked sinus and wax in the ears .

dropping down into heathrow coming from S.A. a week previous was excruciating

You can get and lose hayfever anytime, from my experience. It used to close up my airways and really mess me up. You should go to a doctors none the less!

yeah, it really used to kill me. Weird, here in Dallas, just about everyone has allergies and bangs on about the pollen. I don't even get a sniffle here though, when those around me seem to be in a living hell!

Probably a chest infection, my father-in-law has had exactly the same recently. Get to the docs for some anti-biotics

Tonite the wife is poorly too, and the eldest, home from uni, is also poorly.

I'm used to living with my allergies, pains and aches to the point that sometimes I don't even know that I have them. Well, until they flare up to the unbearable point. Sometimes, only after taking a pain killer I had realised that I actually had pain.

Mind you, tooth pain is another story. Nothing can distract you from it, it's so bleddy awful. That comes second to the child delivering labour pain imo.

There's a bug going around. People are either experiencing prolonged cold, flu or allergy like symptoms or facing a relapse of it. I went through the first one with least medication but had to resort to a steroid nasal spray and an antihistamine to shift it. It has relapsed again for me, and I've had to go on the same formula. My chest isn't congested, though. Just ENT and my head suddenly starts to ache sometimes to the point that I know that it's hurting. I'm getting on with life, though. Touch wood, not yet needing to stay in bed or be off work.

Hope you and your family get better soon.
