Most underlays now are all recycled poly foamy stuff its all more or less same. Go for a decent thickness and it would be nice. My nieghbour is carpet fitter and he said no point in gettin super expensive underlay as made of same stuff. Carpet plays big role i.e natural wool or plastic stuff and carpet pile thickness etc we went for 10mil and its well soft

I beg to differ on that, most are not made of the same stuff, you get cloud9 or the equivalent which is recycled foam, Then you get tredair or duralay which are both rubber waffle types, then you can get system 10 or similar which is a solid rubber crumb type, my advice would be the best you can afford as this is what retains the look of the carpet as the underlay takes the stress out of flattening the carpet pile...which is inevitable in the main walkways and in front of chairs etc..

I would agree with these comments.
Its more about the underlay than the carpet.
Better underlay will make the carpet last longer and feel more luxurious.

Can't tell you the make under the living room carpet for obvious reasons but I'd say choose a mid to high priced underlay. That way you should get a decent quality product. As has been said, it's more about the underlay rather than the carpet.

Tredaire is ok
Think I paid about £5.45 per metre squared for it.
