Exactly that, one of those in entertainment to be around a long time and form part of your childhood memories whether it be on the radio or TV. I used to like Blankety Blank as a kid

You will be sorely missed Sir Tel

Another cancer death.

Got to admit his latter years he really became annoying. Although being force fed Radio 2 every working day has more to do with it. I'd be quite happy if all the current presenters would retire.

Seriously, my sanity wanes everytime I hear Ken Bruce say "here's Lynn Bowles", I get a twitch in my eye every time he play a War of the Worlds song and I start frothing at the mouth whenever Quaterflash is played. Its like being stuck in a loop where everyday is the same like Groundhog day

I suppose that vindicates 'ol Tel as the innane mumblings and music continued long after he left, so it was not of his doing. Rest in peace fella.

Anyone have a link/clip of when he said "It was lovely to see last night Kate'stits, what a lovely pair" on air (talking about Springwatch).

Rest in Peace, Sir TW.

That's a bit shocking, because I don't think any one knew about his short illness being so aggressive. He seemed to be quite healthy until I caught him last on TV in 2014. Mind you, we take time for granted, and nearly two years is actually quite a substantial amount of time for things to change.

It's surprising to know that others like you also found him annoying for your reasons. I did, too. I've only attentively seen/heard his Children in Need sluggish commentary at his later years, although this is not to say that I didn't admire his devotion for CIN. I don't know the guy's past when he was at his very best, I didn't grow up here listening to him etc. so my annoyance relates to my lack of experience of the gentleman.

He seemed like a very placid guy. A very nice guy, I mean.

All this outpouring of grief, for a man who took big bucks from charities to front their do's?

Anyone dying is sad, and I would find it difficult to be falsely sad over anyone's death who barely sparks any emotion in me. I don't know about others, but I had seen him a bit on the annual CIN, and only took interest because Fearne Cotton always put him on a very high pedestal. I wanted to work out why; on a deeper level, but then I gave up.

I had no idea that he charged for that CIN work. I don't mind regular Joey Bloggers doing charity work for some wage, as they do have to pay their bills. But I think Sir TW was quite well off already, wasn't he? Perhaps he charged less than what he originally asked for, and therefore his conscience could be crystal clear about it.

Yes, we all know that.

Depends in which context we apply this wise saying. Either we go hugely individualistic, self-centred, grabbing and insecure sort or we take it as paying attention to the ones close to us; rather than ignoring them and looking great for the rest of the world.

Edited to say: I do know you were being sarcastic to the grabbers. I am just expanding on it.

R.I.P. Terry. he,s been on radio and tv most of my life. as far as charging for charity work you would be surprised how many hands grab a slice of the pie. im sure i read its like 10p for every pound actually goes to the charity. i never knew terry was ill as when they are not on tv you dont hear about it. i was quite shocked to see billy connolly on the tv awards show last week looking very fragile, his parkinsons has got quite bad and as the cameras panned around the audience you could see the look on peoples faces, public and celebrities alike, some teary eyed to see this once larger than life comedian looking so frail.
