Question

My Dad's got this idea into his head that he'd like a timberframe house. I've no idea about such things, can anyone shed any light?
Any useful manufacturer websites etc?
Thanks for any advice.

Border Oak houses are beautiful, and they're all surprisingly inexpensive. Depending on land prices where you are, £150,000 would get you a big house, fully kitted out. A good sized family house would probably run you £80,000 plus land.

The only time I'll be moving out of my current Barratt shoe box will be to move into my timber framed dream house

*shed* any light - good one!!

Seriously though, can you actually get a mortgage for such a property, given that they are not bricks and mortar?

Thumbs up

Uncle B

Most houses built in the 80s were timber framed

Nothing wrong with TF in fact it's thermal rating is miles better than traditional build.

If you mean self build specifically, most of the major lenders have special staged selfbuild mortgage packages

Nowt wrong with timbr framed houses in principle, and morgage companies do not have any bias one way or the other.

A World in Action Programme in around 1987 killed timber framed house building stone dead, and althought there was some truth in what was said in the programme, it was a lot of scare mongering, a bit like these 'builders from hell' programmes.

The critical aspect of a timber framed house is the vapour barrier, if this is broken, and cladd in brickwor the problem cannot be seen and problems will start to manifest themselves.

It is worth notting that up to the ind revolution, most houses in the UK were timber framed, although the quality of the timber could never be re-produced today, not for under £1M anyway.

Any other questions on Building post it on web siter or contact me direct, Jonesselective@aol.com
