Very lucky man indeed. He seems to do a 180 spin at quite a low speed . . . . was there a loss of traction? He needs his tyres checked.

Panic by the driver when he saw the corner coming up after the tunnel too late, leading to massive steering/braking over-correction and some rather nasty lift-off oversteer. There's a chance there was small amount of ice in the tunnel contributing to things, given the unmelted snow by the sides of the road in places.

 

Came out tunnel and didn't expect the bend as prob too busy looking at the new vista, turned in too late and quite abruptly with wheels on gravel at outer side of road and there you go. Crap driving really

 

He was very lucky that concrete culvert was there to break his fall or he could have ended up much worse.

He did not seem to be going that fast - Imo

The heart of it was lack driver ability at the speed he was going and coping with an unexpected bend in the road

I learnt the limits of my driving ability in my Mk2 Mini Cooper on a damp Cornish B road in 1984

It was a massive reality shock tbh, when a car looses it - you don't get a lot of time to correct it

 

He was totally out of control if he was hit before going off the road with oncoming car/ truck, this would have been a fatality. Lucky man.

 

why didnt it explode into flames like in the movies?

As I said before lack of talent/skill nerves did also play a big part,but he put himself in his own situation.I think he was also dazzled by the bright light exiting the tunnel add to that a lack of knowledge of the road that he was driving on also contributed to his accident,so much different variables put together,but it should definitely be lesson learned for him now you can bet on that.SJ.

 

Credit to the guy for not swearing. Most dash cam footage usually contains a dictionary's worth of expletives (usually in Russian).

 

He made a mistake before entering the second tunnel - he didn't look at the end of it, it's clearly visible, and obviously not straight. He didnt read the road, which meant he didn't have a plan beyond listening to his exhaust. He exits the tunnel, hits the uneven join between concrete and tarmac, and, crucially, the pothole on the right (1:17 on the vid), which unsettles the front end just as he turns in. This launches the right front wheel off the tarmac onto the (lower) shoulder, just as he lifts off, the car oversteers because he's changed the roll bars and suspension and stuff. Ironic really, understeering into the barrier on the right would be so much nicer than oversteering off a cliff. He has a build thread on subaruforester.org.
