Fuel filler didn't auto stop..
Am I being a bit of a fanny or should I take this further ?
Was filling the car last night as I have to do a long journey this weekend... When I fill the tank I always just fill with fuel until the fuel pump clicks off... The tank is then full..
On this occasion the auto stop didn't work and I would estimate at least 1/2 gallon of fuel came out of the filler neck downtown the rear quarter and wheel, trousers and left shoe and ran onto the forecourt ...
Trousers maybe salvageable, shoe is ruined ..
Went to cashier and told her the situation, as well as there is lots of fuel on the floor..
She didn't understand me as English wasn't her strong point but she did say the operation of the pumps is checked once a month..
So... I dare say I'm £140 down at minimum for the visit, and my car reeks of fuel due to having to drive home with a shoe full of petrol and a squelching sock..
Do I just let it slide and put it down as bad luck or approach the owner of the station?

I'm not sure what the deal would be with relying on the auto stop feature but if you compared the situation to a supermarket and for example, a bottle of milk burst open and went all over you, they'd be happy to pay for any cleaning bills. Even if it's your fault. I've seen it many times as I work as an engineer in the retail environment. I'd certainly go back to the owner. You don't ask, you don't get!
If it was me I'd definitely be getting in touch with Shell, BP or whoever's customer services directly, rather than the local management. You're doing them a favour in a way, by pointing out a defect in their systems, although obviously the aim is also to get compensation for your own losses.

I doubt it was half a gallon, that would of several(5sec) seconds of you not noticing fuel pouring out of the fuel tank filler. Like all spills a few millilitres looks enormous when spread out on a flat surface. The fact it's petrol and it smells to high heaven exacerbated your opinion of a big spill. Put it down to experience and keep an eye on the pump more thoroughly.
