Here's a pic of a split charge system but you can see how the relay is wired

so something like this?

I want to put a small switch on the fuel pump so I can stop it from pumping fuel. So I can do the odd engine crank over before I start, as it can be a few weeks before each drive, and also help when i do oil changes

The above is the one.

Ian, yours is similar, but if you ground the switch, it would give a short circuit

better name for a switch is the French, "interrupteur". Then you can use it to simply interrupt current flow.

Word of warning; some cigar lighter supplies don't supply power when cranking. Best make sure before hardwiring.

Disable engine (disconnect crank sensor),
put voltmeter on the 12v ignition live (IGN+) wire you intend to use (cigar lighter supply in your case).
Crank engine
Monitor voltage whilst cranking.
If it stays at 10+ volts = good
If it drops to 0volts = no good - you will need to find another wire to use

.....And If its somewhere inbetween 5v and 9v , your battery is goosed or needs charging.

been having another think about this, would it be ok to wire this setup onto the crank sensor, so when the switch is flicked, the engine turns over without starting, or would it be better on the fuel pump?

for the fuel pump, where would be best to wire into the standard wire? before it goes into the pump? or is there anywhere better (under the dash etc)

Seems like a convenient location to break the feed and attach your relay switch circuit
