Car Hire Abroad - Once Paper Driving Licence Counterpart Scrapped
Anyone going abroad and expecting to collect a hire car after 8th June 2015 (after the paper counterpart of your driving licence has been officially scrapped), may be in for some extra pain!
It is being reported that many hire companies are not aware of the changes and travellers are being advised to not destroy the paper counterpart of their licence and still take it with them.
The replacement solution for the paper is a code you get on-line, but once more many hire companies are unaware of the new code system "due" to be up and running by the 8th June, as are many UK drivers!
You are supposed to apply for a code which only remains valid for 72 hours. This code allows the hire company to access and verify your driving licence details. There is a help line for hire companies, but it is only open during normal UK working hours!
When applying for your code on-line you should also be able to get a printout of your driving licence record. Drivers are being advised to take a copy of this when collecting a car.
I see long queues at hire desks this summer, especially where there's a big time difference or you're hiring a car during your time abroad.
I see some mobile providers rubbing their hands over increased data usage, so don't forget to get your code when in range of a free WiFi hot spot and remember to bookmark the link for the code request page on your phones.
