Thought this was an interesting read:

Speaking as someone who works in the general field of Internet security and decryption technologies, I'd probably advise against anyone spending too much time lurking around places like Tor (for the same reasons I'd advise against anyone hanging around any physical location that's commonly frequented by the shadier types in society).

I don't see any signs of an increased exposure to malware and do talk from experience, 12 years working in Security out of the industry for a good while now. You could say that the more good people use it the lower the ratio of bad, but that's not a very good argument either. Use tails and don't order hitmen and you're quite likely safer than posting on Scoobynet.

Hold on this is all being thrown out of proportion.
I just found that article interesting.
If you have enough savvy you can check out the dark web without getting into trouble with the police or getting malware.
Just use your common sense.
I would say the normal internet is just as bad if not worse than the dark web.

What I can say, I'm in the industry right now, and I know for a certain fact that the dark web has become the last refuge of pretty much every low-life using the internet, be that scam-artists and professional criminals of different stripes, malware purveyors and producers, kiddy-**** peddlers, terrorists, you name it, they're there. If that's the kind of people you want to mix with, knock yourself out, I won't lose any sleep over it. As for me personally, I far prefer to leave all that well behind me when I go home from the office at night.

The only possible use of a VPN might be if you're not allowed to connect to the internet or TOR without one, I'd say it's worse as you've now told the VPN that you're connecting to TOR. Just use TAILS. Some info here https://tails.boum.org/support/faq/i...html#index20h2

ISP's are monitoring TOR usage..

Your right that using a VPN is something that is necessary across the clearnet. What were trying to teach people here is that there are lots of security threats around the interwebs, something darknet veterans and rookies are aware of more than most. We want them to implement a VPN when they are surfing the clearnet, for security and privacy protection(and fun reasons like region specific content, i hear UK netflix has a bunch of TV shows not available in the US).
Using a VPN to download Tails and Tor will also help to protect you from ending up on a fancy NSA list. (thanks fort he reminder, Whillhelm)
But your right about VPNs on the darknet, the grugq would agree with you. YES to Tor to VPN connections, NO to VPN to Tor connections."

I expect that TOR and its equivalents will be banned soon as although you can trace it is relatively painful to do so. As a minimum you will be flagged if you do use TOR and then your non-TOR use monitored heavily.
