Plate Retention Period - Decent Surprise!
Recently sent off for a retention extension on one of my plates. On its return I checked the dates and saw it needs to be assigned to a vehicle, (or extended again), before May 2025.
Immediately I thought it was a mistake but after a search it appears it isn't. That has to be a first where 'taxes' are actually being abolished rather than made up and added. It's saved me a few quid every year anyway.

'Bout time. I've got two on retention .
I've always said the DVLA cherished plate department was still living in the 1970's with its yearly paper-based renewals. Whilst everything else was migrating on-line.
One thing the Conservatives got right: Centralising the DVLA and making it more automated. Shutting down all those offices has saved alot of money, getting rid of tax discs has saved even more, and getting rid of annual registration retention will save futher...as every time, they have to print and post something to you it costs the taxpayer money - be it reminders, confirmation letters or certificates etc.
Pity the money isn't used to build new road infrastructure, or fix teh old roads. Well not until an election is looming - all the councils are out fixing street lamps and pothole filling in order to blow the last bit of their budget before the elections.

I'm glad it's moved on from sometimes having to take both vehicles, donor and recipient to the local office for inspection before allowing a transfer.
