Default Vinyl sales hit a record.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/m...-20-years.html

I must say after buying a deck again a few years back I've really been enjoying listening to vinyl. I got back into vinyl because some tunes (or certain mixes) from my youth never made it onto a digital format.

I don't like this streaming, itunes nonsense. I like to own a physical copy of the music I've paid for, whether it be CD or vinyl.

I must be getting old....

Intersting. I`ve just been re-united with my vinyl collection after many years abroad. Unfortunately I sold my Rega deck years ago so i`m looking for a replacement. What deck did you buy?

I bought a Technics SL1210 and upgraded it a bit with a new cart and head shell. Not the height of audiophilia but it suits the sort of music I wanted to listen to ie early hip hop and other club music.

It actually sounds surprisingly good and is a very robust and reliable deck.

Get another 1210 and a mixer, then you too can do some long and exciting mixes of the likes of Ferry Corsten, Tiesto etc LOL

I've also recently bought another turntable after selling my Rega Planar 3 back in about 1990. The one I've just bought is a Michell Gyro SE with a Rega RB303 tonearm.

I never gave vinyl up & always kept the faith. The biggest problem was that most people never heard a really good or even half decent set up.The sound is pretty special if you get it right.

Hip hop be bop don't stop.

Love my vinyl collection, I too got back into it after my dad died 4yrs ago and I was left with his collection, when I have those days when I'm missing him I get his records out and play them just like he used to on a sunday morning when I was a kid, then I throw a few from my youth on, things like Dancing in outer space by Atmosphere, now dats a fookin choon.

Vinyl - what's the point?
Seriously though, as I don't get it.

It takes one back to when times were simpler. For me it's a little bit of a regression to youth.

I have the original Dark Side of the Moon and Wish you were here on vinyl. I'd never play them again, I might frame them t some point.

I also have A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering originals so that's 4 of the 10 greatest albums ever made on vinyl!

I always thought this album has very salacious hidden meanings.

@RSMatt

simpler - what could be more simple than slotting a cd into a cd player, and pressing play?

Plus - the sound quality from vinyl has got to be shyte in comparison.

There is a difference between hearing music & listening to music. Most people don't appreciate that point.

Your comments on vinyl are very common.
To be able to hear a good vinyl system is rare.
To be able to hear a properly set up vinyl system is very rare.

Still have my vinyl and a Linn Axis/K18 combination.
Sadly, my new amp has no cartridge input, the one that was available form my amp maker died a death and was well over £1000.

And I've zero idea which one to use now, so have never gone back.

The sound on vinyl is fuller, the outer reaches of the bass & treble are 'clipped' during the conversion to digital format in order to compress the resultant file.
A good vinyl system craps all over any digital system, especially when the volume goes up

The same misconception occurs with movies too, everybody raves about how blueray is the ultimate, but even old movies still have to be downgraded image-wise in order to fit the format, because the film captured more detail than can be rendered digitally.

CoB, like the Meccano crane in the picture.

Nobody can deny some of the old separate units were an engineering work of art.

.
Yes for cheap CD etc vs expensive vinyl setup.
No for the reverse.

decent CD setup has far higher dynamic range, less distortion, higher signal to noise ratio.

How's it NOT better?

And let's not get into fantasy realms of "it sounds fuller, etc."

All this talk of vinyl is making me itch!!

Just had too slam some sounds on the deck.........................ahhhhh, that's better.

Only vinyl can do this.

Have to say that good cd players are gaining ground.

+1, I know your right about digital being compressed, it's the reason my mate spent an absolute fortune on his hifi and refused to go digital, his collection and system were worth a small fortune a few years back, loads of first edition and special editions from the 60's onwards, he takes very good care of them so the covers all look new in plastic sleeves and never lets anyone touch them, even likes the record to be the right way up when he puts it back in the sleeve.

I've gone through more CD players than turntables! I did actually mean simpler times as in a record player evoking nostalgia.
