Default Road Tax increase for Diesels

Reports of this on the radio this morning based on emissions.

Why is the tax on my 2.2 tdi way lower than the wifes 1.6 petrol then, I'd assumed anything with a Euro 4 diesel engine had great emissions (low) hence the cheaper road tax.

Or are they aiming this at high emission diesels

Another stealth tax no doubt

They obviously need more money for their huge expense accounts so why not hit the people who are not paying much.

I cannot see how they can justify taxing a vehicle that now runs so clean as proven by the tax they pay each year, now I could understand it if it relates to old high banded cars especially if they are higher banded than any petrol vehicle otherwise they would have to tax cars of similar of higher bands to make it fair.

Loads of manufacturers are pulling out of diesel engined cars.. The new EU laws in 2015 will bring in adblue technology and thats not a cheap or good thing.

Most are going to concentrate on Hybrid and small petrol turbocharged cars like Fords ecoboost..

Diesel is a very dirty fuel and getting it burn cleanly and effeciently for an everyday car isnt easy... So much so that the technology to "mask" the carbon build up and exhaust emissions is so troublesome, its not worth the hassle of development. Diesels are only any good when turbocharged, and with modern high pressure petrols achieving great mpg with brilliant reliability its a lot easier to push the public in that direction.
People are still a bit dubious of hybrids, but that will change over the next 5/1o years..

It's about time diesels got some stick compared to petrol. I'm fed up with all the black soot being chucked at me if I'm behind one. We all know the tax on diesels is priced wrong and even with partical filters there re filthy.
Subaru petrol power is the way forward........ I wish lol

This and previous governments haven't learned that you cannot tax something out of existence.

The advent of low, or zero rfl cars has left them yet another budgetary hole they will have to fill somehow.

I'm wondering how they are going to tax the emissions on these electric cars when they eventually take over, no doubt they will find someway of taxing them to death.

Awesome, these driverless cars will give you the option to run over or not run over the cat.

The whole VED scandal needs looking at. All this environment bullcrap is making a mockery of the general rule of tax.
The more you earn, the more you pay in tax. But not if you can afford a brand new car, you can choose to buy one with only £20 a year VED and still get a pretty nice car.

The people who can't afford a nice shiny new car however are left paying a stupid amount of VED for older cars.

Personally I think I am getting ripped off bigtime. I have a Clio that does 800 miles per year...........£230 VED!!
And a mondeo which does £4k miles per year and is...........£230 VED!!!

Jokers!

Everyone who's been behind a diesel knows the amount of sh*t that comes out of the exhaust. Sometimes the cloud of soot is frankly amazing...

Co2 on diesels is low, but that's just one particular pollutant. Most of the other pollutants are higher on diesels that their petrol equivalent.

This.

The road tax isn't used for roads / traffic anyway, it just goes into a big pot with the rest of the tax. If they're not making enough tax money off the VED, they'll increase other taxes to compensate (or borrow more).

How about a tyre tax? Few miles means tyres last longer and careful driving means they last longer. Big cars will need larger tyres etc.

Good news for Trotter

How about scrapping all fuel/VED taxes and just installing toll booths?

Of course they are going to shift the road tax goalposts to maintain the tax revenues. If they invented water powered cars which spewed butterflies and lasted 1000 years and were made of recycled yogurt they would find a way to tax them.

They'd have to increase taxes to pay for the government sponsored butterfly-catchers.
Can you imagine the damage the caterpillars would do to our farming community?

Utter carnage.

My 2 cars have cost £1000 a year to tax.... Although i have just sold one last week.

And you think you are getting ripped off..

VED should go on fuel, more fuel used, more tax...

Total mileage covered for both cars is around 10k for me.

My 4 vehicles don't cost that much!

And I agree, VED should go on the price of fuel.
And the government would get more money via the tax/VAT rip off....
