They can't have done teh whole race in them surely!
Be a nightmare swimming in them if it sunk

Wellies are just for getting in the boat. The shingle on the riverside is pretty unpleasant, and you don't want to get your feet wet either - you row in socks. The boats have special shoes screwed into them - they're a bit like running spikes - so you leave the wellies behind when you go to race.

Couldn't believe they actually rowed in them
I obviously missed the wellies being chucked aboard after the race
