Default 1st Oct - no longer able to sell cars with tax

That came in under the radar!

According to DVLA as of 1st Oct, when you buy a SH car you have to apply for a new tax disc.

Any remaining tax on an old disc will be refunded to the original owner once

they are made aware, so no selling cars with 6 months tax on them.

How's it a money maker if the remaining balance is refunded on sale of the car?

And the new owner can only buy tax from the start of the current month. You almost have to admire the way the scum that are politicians can come up with new ways to fleece us!

Am I right in thinking that you will also be able to pay by Direct debit and there will also be a monthly tax scheme?

And there will also be no tax disc, so they don't have the cost of producing them.

So effectively, as of October, every time a car is sold, the DVLA make the equivalent of 1 months tax on it.

I bet it won't get spent on making motorists lives easier either

No, it should be spent on the redundant workers.

So if I was selling a car ATM, I would stop taxing it at the end of March, then the new buyer taxes it from the beginning of April. The only thing is, I would have to have my new car up and running from April 1st and not use the one I was selling after April 1st.

Anything wrong with that?

Sensible move IMO

The tax disk is a relic of the 19th century - move on

The ability to tax your car, online, in 5 mins flat is worth a lot to me

I bought a car off a Dealer last October, he said he had to leave the tax on it as he could no longer cash it in ...... so I got free Tax until April 2014 - nice one!

Imagine all those lovely aluminium tax disc holders in Halfords - how the hell are they going to sell them?

I think you are on the wrong thread, this isn't about the tax disc

It came in as a result of removing the requirement to display the tax disk

Hence you can't transfer the disk - which represents paid road tax, when you sell the car

Because you have no disk to transfer

So they shifted the concept of road tax to the back end database - which has many advantages - but does enable them to easily introduce this new rule/tax

There is no reason why people couldn't just be able to look up a car's road tax status on the DVLA database. This ruling will just create a nice £50M+ annual surplus in the Swansea coffers

Unfortunately, like local councils & car park fees, the DVLA will come to depend upon the surplus in time

You'll be able to pay by direct debit, but, there's a surcharge on it. Charging for something when they don't actually have to do anything. Win win for the DVLA.

Will it still be only 6 or 12 month options or will it also be monthly ? I have been led to believe that we will be able to tax our cars monthly which would be good for those who only use the summer toy cars

To make this a farce, with all this "technology based" online vehicle taxing...private registrations is still paper and post based.

You could go to a local office, but now its up to 2-3 weeks for swansea to do a reg transfer.

The problem here is I've part-exed the BMW for another one from a dealer way up North (which should be delivered today). And I'm driving it abroad next week. Because everything now has to be "posted in", I will now have a car driving through Eurpoe without a full V5 certificate and not knowing what reg plate should be on it when I come back.

This maybe interesting when I come back and try to use a automated lane at the Eurotunnel. As the number plate recognition will be confused.

If there was a local office, or it could be processed online, then it would be done and dusted in a few days.

my missus has just bought a new car, Ive taken on her old one. she (rather hastily on both our parts) signed the car over to me a couple of days ago, and I had to tax it the next day. from the beginning of October. so, she loses the last ten days of this month, and I pay for the whole month, which is a bit of a swizz.

sounds like just another reason not to bother with a private registration plate to me
