Cool

OK, this is all in fun, no nasty name calling etc.

BUT...

I've had my Scoob for a little over a week, and I keep getting pestered by BMW's. Usually it's 316's and 318's, they just HAVE to pass you on the motorway. Why?

My burgers are on the grill, let the flames begin, HeHe

its interesting why ppl buy BMW's.

i can understand the M3 cause there is nothing else like it if thats what your after but the rest of the 3's????

i suppose the guy from sales who gets his 318 cant really say no but what about ppl that actualy choose them? they are aware,i assume, that many ppl think their nasty little jumped up reps so do they think the car is worth having despite the reputation or do they want the reputation?

OK, true story of tonights journey home from work (made after I started this thread).

I'm cruising at a constant speed in the fast lane, overtaking cars in the middle lane, I get up to a BMW 318 that has been cruising at around 5-10mph slower than me, suddenly he speeds up to 5-10mph faster than me, pulls out into the fast lane and continues to accelerate until he's well ahead of me. Why, for the love of God, why?

I'm thinking of getting a BMW 320d... but I'm not sure if I want the image that goes with BMWs. Reasons why I was thinking of changing the scoob for a BMW are their quality, performance, low depreciation and 50mpg for the diesel. On the negative side are all the other t*ssers who drive them and the t*ssers who hate BMW drivers so much that they damage their cars. Also would anyone let me out of a side road again driving a BMW...

So has anyone got any suggestions for a car to replace the scoob? It shouldn't have the BMW image but should be a quality car with decent performance and sensible running costs?

My mate actually chose to have a BMW 318is as his company car, from a great long list covering every car imaginable. With him it is definitely the image thing . Alright it is marginally better built than his Focus was, but it has considerably less toys, is slower, weighs a lot more and costs him a sh*t load more every month to keep.

I don't have a choice.

From MY01 to BMW 3 Series due to new job. They were not prepared to pay me an allowance to keep and run my Scoob. It was deemed as 'inappropriate'.

Merlin........my brother-in-law has just got a 320d tourer as a company car.He loves it,great to drive and great economy.I like it too.Personally i wouldn't give a $hit what other people think,or about the 'so-called image of BMW drivers'.If i liked a car,and wanted it, i'd get it,....everybody else could go *uck themselves.

paulr - agreed, but just read this. The guy bought a 2nd hand 325 over a new 318. Within a week his BMW was done over in the pub car park - and I thought scoobs were bad for attracting t*ssers but...

Grit your teeth, look agressive as so going flat out, but let him pass easily. He'll then go and tell his mates how he outpaced a guy in a scooby and they'll all laugh at him for being a ****!
When I got my C, I had a prat(I knew the guy from my village) in a saxo try to race me and I did the above. He came into the pub bragging to everyone (who knew what my car was and what his was) about how he outran me. Everyone laughed at him and he went very sheepish and sat by himself in the corner.

You think it's bad in a Scooby, try driving an M3 it's much worse.
I'm sure it's the smaller the engine the more they wanna prove there car is faster.
Maybe it's a BM thing, but if i come up behind another BM and they spy the M3 badge the just start putting their foot down , taking the bends really fast. I do think it's funny

Hello - BMW driver here. Stumbled across a link to this forum from elsewhere, this thread has made interesting reading. OK, lets address those points shall we?

First off, image. Common sense tells us any negative image that BMW has attained is not held by BMW drivers. The only people who subscribe to such irrational views are non BMW owners, a lot of whom are small-minded, jealous people. Thank you all for confirming this. And while were on the subject of stereotypes, there is a school of thought which says that all Scooby drivers are Colin McRae wannabes, who tear around in cars that wouldnt look out of place in a Wacky Races cartoon. All those bonnet scoops, park-bench spoilers and 4" exhausts - very comical!

Second, the 3 series range. This is a family of models which has grown and evolved to accomodate almost every market sector over a period of 40-odd years, and kept the company itself at the top of the prestige bracket. This is not a one-off product line which managed to drag a little-known eastern car company out from near obscurity, purley on the strength of it whizzing round a few dirt tracks quicker than anyone else.

Thats all for now - if I can be arsed coming into this ****hole of a forum again, I'll be willing to reply to any comments you may have. I cant see it happening though.

the people who subscribe to this belife are huge in number. while i can understand that BM drivers might not belive the image but are they so blinkered as to ignore it exists?

either they disregard the image...which is odd because there are many things that people do that they like but know others dislike so they keep to themselves..they dont parade their disregard of what others dislike in front of those others.

You are like the transvestite that use to wander around the high st where i worked as a kid...everyone knew he looked a **** but he didnt seem to care.

or they like the image which says a lot about the type of person hence the image self fuels itself.

T

ps- jealous? there are people on here who cant afford to run their psh bikes right through to people who could by an M3 many times over...to suggest the reason for th dislike is jealousy is to use a lazy cop out.

edit to add you forgot to complete your profile fully...i was wondering if you sold hovers or double glazzing? my dyson is on the way out you see.

...or they appreciate the quality / reliability / looks / etc of their bimma and accept that everyone has different opinions, so some will agree with the choice and others won't...

Sorry but a 3 series is not a prestige car and BMW is not a prestige brand.
Ferrari Aston etc etc are prestige cars but BMW is not
I think you will find that MR Melon with his 31?i 32?i truly believes he is driving a road legal weapon and that he has finally made it into the big league? LOL. As with everything else you will find that thiese sort of vehicles really do attract the under achievers and want to be's as they have something to prove

I'd rather drive something more exclusive than a boring BMW. Our car park at work is full of them and funnily enough nearly all of the drivers who choose them are arrogant jerks who are never wrong , yeah and I have to work with them day in day out.

Unfortunately it seems most BMW drivers are not the enthusiasts who are interested in quality engineering, most seeming to be thrusting males whos desire to drive something seen by some as a status symbol is obviously there to ease thier inescurities about having tiny c@cks !

AllanB

PS I was nearly run off the road yet again by a BMW driver today , but thats normal.

My brother has bought a second hand 316 Compact, he's happy with the base level spec, the lack of performance, but it's a BMW so he's happy. He does not think it enhances todger size nor does he go racing faster cars, he had an Astra 1.8 Sport before this BM.
As far as he is concerned it's a BM and possibly enhances his image.

Mate that has the 328, he wanted a fast comfortable nice car that handled well. He does not believe it enhances todger size, or gives him supreme driving abilities. But he is now smitten with it. And it was ME who recommended he try one. I won't repeat the comment when I made the suggestion. He had a Merc at the time.

Also recently BM drivers have been letting me out of turings and being pleasant to me on the roads, (I was shocked as well!!)

Even had one BM driver chatting to me about the Scoob and complementing it in a petrol station.

So not all BM drivers are bad. I had considered a 328 before I test drove the Scoob.

You get @rse holes in every make of car.

Just reading through this thread and something occured to me. My entire department in my previous job consisted of about 20 guys between 20 and 30. Only one of them drove a BMW.

The biggest prat of the lot was the one with the 318i shed (about 6 years old at the time). He swore by them and after the thing letting him down at least 6 times (2 fuel pumps, 1 tank and 3 electrical faults) in the 2 years he had it, he went out and bought another because he wanted to be in the BMW crowd.

He used to try and talk cars with me (me being the petrolhead of the department) and i can honestly say.. he knew jack s**t about cars. One time we were talking about american muscle cars and he mentioned having a shot of a 'bandit' Trans Am and how he had it over 150 and how it had a massive 2.5L engine. I nearly fell off my seat.

He may be just one (bad) example of a BMW driver but he's the only one i know personally who considered himself a BMW enthusiast.

I don't tar all BMW drivers with the same brush as i know there are some genuine enthusiasts who use this BBS. Just the one i know and the ones that sit up my @r5e on the motorway.

My brother has just bought a new M3 (nice car ). I suggested that he join a few BMW forums for a bit of banter. After a few days he reported that talking about trim colours matching paintwork was not his thing. I suggested that he lurked on SN instead.

Oooh! a biter!(bm_boomer) anyway, I shall put my 2p's in!
1stly I'm not a scooby owner & not overly keen on the image, but they're good cars (as are most bmw's).
People used to buy bmw's for their 'exclusitivity' but now they are sooo common this is now a bit of an oxymoron, yet many (not all, i know) current bmw's think they are driving an exclusive car which they are not. Many also buy bmw's for the badge and not the car (which many of us do) which is fair enough but only up to a point. If bmw sold a real POS and put a bmw badge on, would you buy it, many would!
Anyway, my problem is not with the cars themselves (as I said, many of them are good cars) but the reasons people buy/drive them. In real terms an Audi or Merc etc. is as good but doesn't have such a, IMO, poor image (a different image yes, but still better since people don't generalise about them as much).
Common sense tells us any negative image that BMW has attained is not held by BMW drivers. The only people who subscribe to such irrational views are non BMW owners, a lot of whom are small-minded, jealous people.
Well obviously! and a bit of a daft statement, especially given that you criticise the scoob for the very same reason! Regardless, given that only a small minority of the population (1-5% tops) own/drive bmw's that means that most people may not like the image. Ermm, Jealous?? Some are but most are not given that they are cheap as chips these days if you just want the 'badge'.

Ultimately, BMW's are rather good cars but the image will put me (and a great deal many others) off buying one, probably ever. You see as many new bmw 3's as you do golfs/fiesta's etc. Who, given the choice, would have a car thats as common as sliced bread???? There are, after all, many cars as good as BMW's but with a much better image.

I didnt say all fords are reliable(I would not buy another ford BTW. Due to the dealer service). My Escort RS has not let me down, however the cavalier i drive now, has left me broken down on the M3 once(once is not bad though). I drive down the M3 everyday of the week and usually see newer cars like BMW's and mercs broken down.

PS I should have put a sticky tongue out smilie after 'are they that unreliable?.'
